📸: Image from Sunday, 9/27/2026. High tide flooding is expected over the next several days during the peak high tide hours.
-------------
We have had several questions regarding the flooding around the main intersection of the Causeway and Fort Macon Road during these unusually high tides, especially with no rain. Here is what is happening:

The NCDOT storm drain lines along the AB Causeway and Fort Macon Road drain toward the sound. The outlets are positioned above the normal high-tide level, allowing rainwater to naturally flow out of the pipes by gravity. This helps move rainwater off the roadways.

However, during an above-normal high tide—or when a high tide occurs along with rain—the soundside canals can rise above the storm drain outlets. Once those outlets are covered, rainwater can no longer drain out through the system.

When the tide rises high enough, saltwater can actually be pushed back up through the same storm drain lines and out through the storm grates onto the roadways. As the tide falls below the level of the storm drain outlets, the soundside canal water in the roadways will drain back through the system.

There is another factor as well. During these exceptionally high tides, water can rise above docks and bulkheads and over the edges of some soundside properties. That water can move up side streets and across yards toward the center of town, adding even more water to the Causeway and the main intersection at Fort Macon Road.

So, what you are seeing is a combination of extremely high tidal water, stormwater drainage that relies on gravity, and additional sound water moving inland during the highest tides.
Once the tide begins to fall, the drainage system can resume its normal function and the roadway water will recede.

⚠️ 🚘 Please use caution if you must drive through standing water. If your vehicle goes through saltwater, be sure to rinse it thoroughly—especially the undercarriage—to help remove salt and reduce corrosion. 🚘 ⚠️
