Today, we pause to remember Officer Laverne Harrison Carr, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty 97 years ago.

Patrolman Laverne Carr succumbed to injuries he received in a motorcycle accident at Morris Avenue and Atlantic Avenue in Atlantic City.

He was on patrol and was returning to the station when he skidded into the safety island and received a skull fracture. He was transported to Atlantic City Hospital, where he died three days later.

Patrolman Carr was a United States Army WWI veteran and had served with the Atlantic City Police Department for at least one year. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Carr and his family. His service and sacrifice will never be forgotten by the Atlantic City Police Department or the community he so bravely served.

End of Watch: June 6, 1929

The Atlantic City Police Department is thankful to report that both officers injured in yesterday’s incident are expected to recover. One officer, who initially suffered life threatening injuries, remains in serious but stable condition at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.
We want to thank AtlantiCare and its trauma team, nurses, doctors, and support staff for their quick, professional care. We also appreciate our local elected officials, community partners, faith leaders, and all Atlantic City residents who have reached out and are keeping our officers in their thoughts and prayers.
Thank you as well to our fellow law enforcement agencies and first responders who responded, assisted with the investigation, provided coverage, and checked on our officers and our department. The members of ACPD, along with our dispatchers, EMS, firefighters, and civilian staff, continue to support one another as a close knit family.
Most of all, we thank the families of our injured officers for their strength and support during this difficult time.

The Atlantic City Police Department has unveiled a new HERO patrol car in support of the John R. Elliott HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers. While it serves as a regular patrol vehicle, it carries an important message: be a HERO, choose a designated driver and help prevent drunk driving injuries and fatalities.

The ACPD provided the vehicle, and the HERO Campaign provided the custom wrap to raise awareness throughout the community.

The John R. Elliott HERO Campaign is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending drunk driving tragedies by promoting responsible designated drivers. The campaign was founded in memory of Navy Ensign John R. Elliott of Egg Harbor Township, who was killed by a drunk driver in July 2000, just two months after graduating from the United States Naval Academy.

On April 24, 2026, Sergeant Brian Hambrecht was flagged down near North Carolina and Baltic Avenues regarding a male inside 704 N. Maryland Avenue reportedly armed with a knife. As he investigated, Sgt. Hambrecht advised responding units that the suspect was holding a female at knife-point inside the residence.

Officers Andres Ayala-Cabrera and Azale Carter-Reynolds arrived on scene and heard a female pleading for help from within. They immediately unholstered their service weapons and entered the home. Inside the kitchen, they located the suspect holding the victim against her will with a knife. Upon seeing officers and hearing commands, the suspect dropped the weapon and released the victim unharmed.

Officers Ayala and Carter quickly took the suspect into custody without further incident actions that very likely saved a life.
For their outstanding actions, both officers have been awarded the 803 Award and were recommended for commendations. Their composure, teamwork, and decisive response reflect the highest standards of our department.

The Department of New Jersey’s 10th annual South Jersey Regional Stand Down was held on May 20 in Atlantic City, bringing vital support to local veterans facing VA, housing, employment, and other needs.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the All Wars Memorial Soldiers Home, 1510 Adriatic Ave., veterans received help with VA medical and mental health care, benefits and claims, housing resources, and employment services. Lunch, clothing for men and women, and hygiene products were also provided at no cost.

The Atlantic City Police Department’s Neighborhood Coordination Officers and Community Relations officers were proud to stand alongside our veterans, helping connect them with services, providing support on site, and building stronger relationships with those who served our nation.

This Stand Down was a true community effort. In addition to ACPD and national and state VA teams, partners included the Elks, New Jersey Casino Control Commission, New Jersey State Parole, and many other dedicated agencies and volunteers.

ACPD thanks every volunteer and partner who made the 10th annual Stand Down a success. If you are interested in volunteering at a future South Jersey Regional Stand Down, please email [email protected].
