NPSNJ Native Plant School Guide~
Geared towards volunteers and teachers, this 12-page Guide is a comprehensive tool for anyone interested in starting a school garden. Sections include information on ecosystems, a garden design, lesson plan ideas, and practical advice and resources.

The Guide focuses on a carefully-chosen palette of plants: beautiful, easy-to-grow, and that bloom in spring and fall when students are in school. The plants not only serve as food and habitat for pollinators and birds but also provide valuable learning opportunities.
We believe that engaging kids to learn about native plants is vital to our planet’s future.

I am a HARBOR SEAL...
We like to VISIT NJ in WINTER.
Even though only 30-50 pounds, I’m not a baby... I am a yearling that was born last spring. We stay with our mothers for only about one month, and then we are completely on our own.

I am a carnivore with very sharp teeth to hunt live fish, so don't try to feed me... I will bite you or your dog if you get too close!

I have a thick layer of blubber to keep me warm, so please do not try to cover me with a blanket... that could make me overheat. When lying on the beach I am trying to rest, so please stay at least 150 feet away from me. Too many people looking at me make me nervous, so I might flee back into the ocean before I’m rested and ready.

If you are concerned about me, please call the 24-hour hotline and trained Stranding Technicians will check on me... Thank you!

As you head out on the water this holiday weekend, please remember that it is calving season for the Bottlenose dolphins that call New Jersey waters home. Should you encounter dolphins while spending the day out on the water, please practice safe boating around them, and give them plenty of space! Dolphin calves cannot swim as quickly and could be injured by boats and jet skis. If you spot a marine mammal or sea turtle in distress, please call MMSC's 24-hour hotline (609) 266-0538. Thank you!
