Last night, Atmore Police narcotics investigators talked to the Explorers and showed them various drugs and talked about the dangers of addiction. Sgt McMann went in a different direction and provided a presentation on Online Safety for Teens. We also mutually agreed its time to update the narcotics cork board display.

All railroad crossings from Cowpen Creek Road to Tumbling Lane are currently blocked due to a semi-truck becoming stuck on the tracks at the Tumbling Lane crossing.

The train reportedly stopped approximately 100 yards from the semi-truck. The crossings will remain blocked until a towing service can remove the truck.

Please avoid the area and use an alternate route until further notice.

Last night the Explorers were shown drone operations by Officer Sharpless. Officer Lambeth spoke to them about traffic stops. Officer Strehl spoke to them about DUI's. Officer Lambeth attempted the Walk and Turn wearing drunk goggles and failed miserably.

The Explorer Program started yesterday. Sgt Lowery spoke about patrol operations. K9 Officer Hochstetler and K9 Officer Land provided a K9 demonstration.

💙 CELEBRATING ONE OF OUR OWN 💙

We want to take a little time today to spread something positive about one of our own. Mr. Jackson doesn’t know we’re doing this, but we want our community to learn a little bit about the man behind the scenes who does so much for our department.

This is Michael “Big Mike” Jackson, one of our civilian employees. Every day, bright and early, Mike shows up ready to work. He does his best to make sure our patrol vehicles are running like they should, our facility is taken care of, and whatever needs fixing gets he’ll help see it gets fixed.

But there’s a lot more to Mike than what he does for our department.

He’s a veteran, a pastor, a husband, and as you can see, a very proud granddaddy.

A while back, Mike received some unfortunate news regarding his health. But if you know Mike, you know it didn’t stop him. Not one beat.

He faced the road ahead with strength, determination, and a faith that has guided him every step of the way.

Yesterday, Mike got to ring that bell. 🔔

He received his final treatment, marking the end of a long chapter and a moment that we couldn’t be happier to celebrate with him.

Mike, we are incredibly proud of you, not only for the strength you’ve shown, but for the positive attitude you bring everywhere you go. You always have an encouraging word for the people around you… sometimes even the arrestees. 😂

On July 28, 2026, the Atmore Police Department received a report of a stolen dirt bike from the Canoe community. The dirt bike belonged to a child (pretty sad to steal from a child tbh), and officers immediately began investigating the theft.

As a result of the investigation, officers with the Atmore Police Department recovered the stolen dirt bike and made arrests in connection with the case on July 30, 2026.

The stolen dirt bike was located inside a room of a residence belonging to Daren Knighten of Canoe, Alabama. Investigators discovered the dirt bike in the process of being stripped down in preparation for being repainted.

Knighten was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Escambia County Detention Center.

Daren Knighten has been charged with:

* Receiving Stolen Property, First Degree
* Possession of a Controlled Substance (2 Counts)
* Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

As a result of the investigation, Austin Buckhault was also arrested in connection with this case. Buckhault was charged with:

* Receiving Stolen Property, First Degree
* Possession of a Controlled Substance
* Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

The Atmore Police Department is pleased that this stolen property has been recovered and is to be returned to its rightful owner.

The Atmore Police Department appreciates the hard work and dedication of the officers and investigators involved in bringing this case to a successful conclusion.

As with all criminal cases, the charges against Mr. Knighten and Mr. Buckhault are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Earlier this afternoon, officers with the Atmore Police Department located a subject who had been actively evading law enforcement in the past and was wanted on numerous outstanding warrants from multiple agencies.

Officers located Michael Darnell Pleasant inside a vehicle at the Dollar General on South Main Street near Lindberg Avenue. Pleasant was wanted on active Alabama warrants, including Felony Attempting to Elude Law Enforcement and Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance, as well as outstanding warrants from the State of Florida.

As marked patrol units arrived to assist undercover officers, Pleasant fled the scene in the vehicle.

Officers initiated a vehicle pursuit, which continued south and concluded near the Alabama-Florida state line on South Main Street.

A short time later, Pleasant’s vehicle was located wrecked on Greenland Road, just south of the Alabama-Florida state line in Escambia County, Florida. Pleasant was taken into custody at the scene by law enforcement officers and will be housed at the Escambia County (Florida) Detention Center pending further proceedings.

As a result of today’s incident, Pleasant is expected to face additional charges in Alabama, including Felony Attempting to Elude Law Enforcement, in addition to his previously issued outstanding warrants.

Pleasant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Atmore Police Department would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Wind Creek Casino & Hotel Atmore for their generous donation of $17,588.68 through their Ticket In, Ticket Out (TITO) Donation Program.

The TITO Donation Program allows casino guests to donate the remaining balances from their gaming vouchers rather than redeeming them. Those donated funds are then distributed to local nonprofit organizations and public service agencies, creating a meaningful way for visitors to directly support the surrounding community.

We are honored to have been selected as a recipient of this donation.

On July 8, 2026, officers with the Atmore Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle.

The driver pulled over in a gas station parking lot, let out a female, and then fled from officers.

Shortly after the pursuit began, the driver was observed by the lead officer discharging a firearm from the vehicle.

Officers continued the pursuit as the vehicle traveled to the end of Martin Luther King Drive at the Intersection of Northgate Road. The vehicle traveled through the intersection and entered a field, where it became disabled after becoming stuck.

Officers deployed the Atmore Police Department's FLIR-equipped unmanned aerial system (drone) to assist in locating the suspect. The drone quickly located the individual, and officers used the drone's public address system to communicate with the suspect, issuing commands to surrender and providing instructions for his arrest.

The suspect complied with officers' commands and was taken into custody without further incident.

The vehicle was found to contain illegal narcotics and drug paraphernalia.

Dyllan Thompson, of Pensacola, Florida, was arrested and charged with the following:

Attempt to Commit the crime of Murder (Attempted Murder)
Felony - Attempting to Elude Law Enforcement
Possession of Controlled Substance - Crack Co***ne
Possession of Ma*****na II
Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Thompson was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center. A jail photo will be added when available.

As with all criminal cases, the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
