On this day... 24 years ago 246 people went to sleep in preparation for their morning flights. 2,606 people went to sleep in preparation for work in the morning tomorrow. 343 firefighters went to sleep in preparation for their morning shift. 60 police officers went to sleep in preparation for morning patrol. 8 paramedics went to sleep in preparation for the morning shift of saving lives.

None of them saw past 10:00am Sept 11, 2001. In one single moment life may never be the same. As you live and enjoy the breaths you take today and tonight before you go to sleep in preparation for your life tomorrow, kiss the ones you love, snuggle a little tighter, and never take one second of your life for granted.

Never Forget

Did you know that 15 percent of motor vehicle crashes with injuries were the result of distracted driving? There is a 400 percent increase of time spent with eyes off the road while texting. The risk of a crash or near-crash increases by 95 percent when reaching for or dialing a phone. It’s been found that 12% of crashes involved engaging with cell phones.

Texting is the most alarming distraction. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that's like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed. You cannot drive safely unless the task of driving has your full attention.

If you know the person your driver is texting, ask the driver to hand over the phone so you can say something. Then send a message that says, "Driving, talk to you later." If your driver teases you about being nervous, it's the perfect opener to say, "Yeah, texting and driving freaks me out”.

Alternatively, you can install apps that help…

For Android operating system: In addition to Android Auto, there are apps that utilize the GPS and Network Location services of Android mobile phones to estimate the speed that the cell phone is travelling at the time text messages are sent. As noted before, some of these apps are "paired". One example of a paired app is "TextWatcher".

For iPhone operating system (iOS): Apple iPhones using iOS 11 or later have a built-in feature called "Do Not Disturb While Driving". This feature is part of the operating system and does not need to be added or downloaded separately. It uses parameters such as motion detection and network connections to detect driving and can be activated in the iPhone's "Do Not Disturb" settings. To find this feature, tap the "Settings" icon, and then scroll down to "Do Not Disturb". Next, scroll down to "Do Not Disturb While Driving". Once turned on, it will block incoming text messages while the car is being driven.

Most importantly, we here at LRVFD want you and your family to be safe while driving. Please don’t text and drive.

Thank you to and for the generous donation of canned drinking water! And thank you to Budweiser-Busch Dist. Co of Loxley for taking the time to deliver the water to our fire station. The water will help keep our responders safe & hydrated while they battle wildfires and respond to long incidents in extreme heat.

This water was provided through the Emergency Drinking Water for Wildland Firefighters program. We’re thankful for the program & its mission to provide clean water to first responders during wildfire season. Learn more about the program at www.nvfc.org/water.

Keeping firefighters hydrated during long incidents or disasters such as wildfires is a critical need for fire departments. This program supports departments in meeting that need.

is right around the corner and if you are heading to the water this weekend remember to:

🛟 Be mindful of other boaters, share the waterway and remain courteous at all times
🛟 Never operate a vessel while impaired
🛟 Wear your life jacket! PFDs save lives
🛟 Canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are considered to be vessels and are subject to PFD requirements
🛟 Consider taking a paddle-sports safety class if participating in paddle sports
