🙏Today, we pause to honor a fallen Lawman.🙏

On behalf of the Atoka County Sheriff’s Office, we extend our deepest thoughts and prayers to the LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office, the family of the deputy, and all those who served alongside him. There are no words sufficient for a loss like this, but there is a shared understanding among those who wear the badge—an understanding of duty, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment.

This profession demands a level of courage that most will never be asked to give. Every shift begins with the unknown, and every call carries risk. Yet, men and women across this country answer that call anyway. They stand in the gap, placing themselves between danger and the communities they swore to protect.

Today is a reminder that the badge is more than a symbol—it represents a promise. A promise to serve, to protect, and, when necessary, to give everything.

We ask our community to join us in lifting up this deputy’s family and agency in prayer. And we ask that you take a moment to recognize the men and women in your own communities who continue to serve with that same courage and dedication every single day.

May we never take their sacrifice for granted.

Rest easy, Deputy. Your watch is complete.

Today, I’m proud to recognize two of our own who have officially graduated from the CLEET Basic Academy.

Please join me in congratulating Lawmen Corey Fowlkes and Gavyn Castleberry on this accomplishment. Completing the academy is no small task—it takes discipline, commitment, and a willingness to serve something greater than yourself.

Corey and Gavyn have both stepped forward to answer that call, and they now return home ready to serve the citizens of Atoka County with integrity, professionalism, and strength.

When you see them out in the community, take a moment to welcome them. We’re proud to have them wearing this badge and representing this office.

PRESS RELEASE
ARREST MADE IN LANE HOMICIDE CASE

Today, we are proud to announce that Brandon Barrett has been indicted by a federal grand jury in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma for the murder of Boyd Fortenberry in Lane, Oklahoma.

On Tuesday, March 17, 2026, Barrett was taken into custody.

This case was investigated by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), with assistance from your Atoka County Sheriff’s Office. Because this crime occurred in Indian Country and involved a Native American suspect, the case was presented in federal court.

From the beginning, this case has been about one thing — justice for Boyd Fortenberry.

To Boyd’s family and friends:
We have not forgotten. We have stood with you, and we will continue to stand with you. While nothing can undo your loss, we hope today brings a measure of peace knowing that accountability is being pursued.

To the citizens of Atoka County:
This is what happens when agencies work together and refuse to quit. Your Sheriff’s Office was proud to stand alongside our state and federal partners to see this case through. We will continue to fight for this community and for every victim who deserves a voice.

Sheriff Kody Simpson stated:
"We don’t stop. We don’t forget. And we will always pursue justice for the people of this county."

This case now moves forward in federal court.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
