Attleboro Fire Department, Attleboro High School Partner to Provide Students Fire Service Training: ATTLEBORO — The Attleboro Fire Department has partnered with Attleboro High School's Career and Technical Education (CTE) program to provide students with hands-on training and exposure to careers in firefighting, EMS and emergency response.

The program launched this school year and will continue during the 2026-27 school year, giving students direct exposure to the realities of firefighting, rescue operations and emergency response through classroom instruction and live demonstrations conducted by Attleboro firefighters.

Students participating in the program receive training and instruction in topics including radio communications, fire behavior, personal protective equipment (PPE), ropes and knots, structural search techniques, vehicle extrication, forcible entry, ventilation, and water supply operations.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, Attleboro firefighters spend two hours working directly with students, providing instruction and mentorship. Crews bring engines, ladder trucks, specialized rescue tools and vehicles for live extrication training, giving students a rare opportunity to experience the realities of the fire service while still in high school.

“This gives students an opportunity to see what the fire service is truly about before ever applying for a job,” said District Chief Mark Renker. “Traditionally, most firefighting skills are learned after someone is hired by a department. This program allows students to experience the teamwork, discipline, physical demands and technical skills involved in the profession while they are still in high school. It helps students make informed career decisions and exposes them to opportunities they may never have realized existed.”

The fire service curriculum has been integrated into Attleboro High School's Criminal Justice CTE pathway. The curriculum has been modified to encompass multiple aspects of public safety, including policing, firefighting, EMS, dispatching and other public safety professions, expanding career exposure for students interested in emergency services and public safety careers.

Capt. Adam Meier said the partnership reflects a growing effort to introduce students to meaningful career pathways while also helping address the future workforce needs of emergency services.

“This is about creating opportunities,” said Capt. Meier. “Whether students eventually pursue firefighting, EMS, law enforcement, public safety communications or another profession entirely, they are gaining leadership skills, confidence, teamwork and real-world experience that will benefit them for years to come.”

The program builds on a longstanding partnership between the Attleboro Fire Department and the school system. In 2026, firefighters completed their 10th year of providing CPR, AED and Heimlich maneuver training to Attleboro High School freshmen through the department’s Heart Safe Schools initiative. Over the past decade, thousands of students have received lifesaving training through the program, helping create a generation of young adults capable of recognizing and responding to cardiac emergencies.

“This program is a natural progression of the department’s longstanding commitment to student engagement and public safety education,” said Lt. Corey Blais, who piloted the Heart Safe Schools program. “For years, firefighters have worked with students through CPR education and community outreach. Expanding into hands-on fire service training gives students an even deeper understanding of emergency services and the opportunities available within the profession.”

“This partnership demonstrates what can happen when schools and public safety agencies work together,” said Training Lt. Dan Murray. “Students are not only learning about careers. They are building confidence, learning critical life skills, and developing a stronger connection to their community.”

Superintendent David Sawyer thanked the Attleboro Fire Department for its partnership.

“One of the goals of career and technical education is to help students connect what they learn in the classroom with future career opportunities,” said Superintendent Sawyer. “This partnership with the Attleboro Fire Department provides students with direct access to experienced professionals and practical training that helps them better understand the many career paths available in public safety. We are proud to offer opportunities that prepare students for success after high school.”

Attleboro Firefighters Quickly Extinguish Truck Fire, Prevent Spread to Nearby Home:

ATTLEBORO — Chief Scott Lachance reports that Attleboro firefighters quickly extinguished a pickup truck fire Monday afternoon, preventing the large flames that consumed the vehicle from spreading to a nearby home.

At approximately 1:27 p.m., on Monday, June 8, Attleboro Fire Department crews were dispatched to 5 Bishop Ave. for a report of a vehicle fire with multiple explosions adjacent to a residence.

Upon arrival, crews found a construction pickup truck heavily involved in fire and positioned close to the home. Heat from the fire had already begun melting the home’s vinyl siding.

Firefighters immediately initiated an aggressive fire attack and brought the blaze under control in approximately 10 minutes, preventing further damage to the residence.

During overhaul operations, firefighters located multiple compressed gas cylinders inside the vehicle that had ruptured during the fire, accounting for several explosions reported by witnesses.

“This fire had the potential to spread to the home,” said District Chief Mike Maitland. “The siding had already begun melting from the heat, and the structure could have become involved if crews had not acted so quickly. Thanks to the professionalism of our Attleboro Firefighters, the fire was swiftly brought under control, preventing more extensive property damage.”

Members of the Attleboro Fire Investigation Unit responded to determine the cause of the fire. The cause remains under investigation but is not considered suspicious at this time.

The Attleboro Building Department was also requested to the scene to evaluate damage to the residence.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

Crews cleared the Bishop Avenue scene at approximately 2:14 p.m.

Training in the Dark: Preparing for the Worst Conditions

ATTLEBORO- Attleboro Firefighters conducted search and rescue drills in realistic zero-visibility conditions, simulating the environments crews often face during working structure fires.

Using a smoke-filled training area, firefighters practiced locating victims, maintaining crew integrity, communicating effectively, and navigating unfamiliar spaces when visibility is reduced to nearly zero.

Search operations are among the most challenging and critical tasks performed on the fireground. In a real emergency, firefighters must quickly and systematically search for occupants while operating in high heat, heavy smoke, and stressful conditions.

Regular training in these realistic scenarios helps build confidence, reinforce fundamental skills, and ensure crews are prepared to perform when seconds matter most.

At the Attleboro Fire Department, training never stops. Continuous hands-on training allows our members to sharpen their skills, improve teamwork, and provide the highest level of service to the community when called upon.

Attleboro Fire Department Extinguishes Late-Night Vehicle Fire

ATTLEBORO, MA — On Friday, May 29, at approximately 11:00 p.m., Attleboro Fire Department crews were dispatched to the area of Washington Street and Scott Road for a reported vehicle fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a pickup truck fully engulfed in flames. Crews quickly brought the fire under control and utilized firefighting foam to extinguish remaining fuel-fed fire resulting from spilled vehicle fluids.

The fire was extinguished without incident, and crews remained on scene until approximately 11:30 p.m. No injuries were reported.

At the same time, other Attleboro Fire Department units responded to a motor vehicle crash on the Interstate 295 North off-ramp to Interstate 95. Firefighters arrived to find a single vehicle that had struck a concrete barrier.

The lone occupant had self-extricated prior to the arrival of emergency personnel and was not injured.

The Massachusetts State Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

Attleboro Fire Department Extinguishes Fire in Pizza Restaurant: The Attleboro Fire Department extinguished a fire in a pizza restaurant on Saturday evening.

Firefighters responded to 104 Park St. at about 5:03 p.m. on May 23 for reports of a fire inside the restaurant.

First-arriving companies reported heavy dark smoke coming from the restaurant upon arrival. Fire crews quickly made an interior attack using portable fire extinguishers and brought the fire under control in approximately five minutes.

The restaurant is attached to a multi-family residential structure. Smoke from the fire entered portions of the attached building; however, crews were able to prevent any fire extension or damage to the residential occupancy.

"Fires in restaurants can be difficult due to the variety of potential ignition sources and cooking equipment involved," said District Chief Michael Maitland. "Crews extinguished this fire extremely quickly, preventing further damage to the restaurant and surrounding structure."

Gas and electrical service to the restaurant were terminated following the incident. The local Health Department was notified.

Members of the Attleboro Fire Investigation Unit responded to determine the exact cause of the fire. Preliminary observations indicate the damage was isolated to the area surrounding the fryer.

No injuries were reported.

Fire crews remained on scene until approximately 6:02 p.m.

During the incident, station coverage was provided by the Pawtucket Fire Department, Mansfield Fire Department, North Attleborough Fire Department, and Cumberland Emergency Medical Services.

Suspicious Vehicle Fire Investigated at Attleboro Car Dealership:

ATTLEBORO — Attleboro Fire Department responded to a car dealership at 957 Washington St. early Saturday morning for a fire which appears to be suspicious.

At about 12:03 a.m., on Saturday, May 16, crews were dispatched for a reported dumpster fire. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered two vehicles fully involved in fire.

Using firefighting foam, crews were able to quickly contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to additional vehicles nearby. The fire was extinguished in approximately 10 minutes.

The fire had spread to a second vehicle by the time crews arrived.

“There was potential for multiple additional vehicles to catch fire,” District Chief Mike Maitland said. “The quick actions of responding crews prevented further loss.”

The Attleboro Fire Investigation Unit was called to the scene. Lead investigator Capt. Nick Sheehan said the investigation remains in its early stages. The dealership is cooperating fully with investigators.

“This is still very early in the investigation, but due to the nature of the fire, it is being investigated as suspicious at this time,” Sheehan said.

Crews remained on scene until approximately 1:18 a.m.

No injuries were reported.

Any questions regarding potential criminal charges should be directed to the Attleboro Police Department.

Attleboro Fire Department Trains on Mobile Decontamination System with Sturdy Health: ATTLEBORO — The Attleboro Fire Dep...

Attleboro Fire Department Trains on Mobile Decontamination System with Sturdy Health:
ATTLEBORO — The Attleboro Fire Department conducted training this week on the department’s mobile decontamination system in collaboration with staff from Sturdy Health to ensure both agencies are prepared to operate the system in the event of a large-scale hazardous materials or contamination incident.

The mobile decontamination unit is designed to rapidly process a large number of patients during emergencies involving hazardous substances, chemical exposure, or other contamination events. The system consists of three separate tents connected by three corridors designed to safely move patients through the decontamination process.

Two corridors are designated for ambulatory patients who are able to walk through the system independently. A third corridor is specifically designed for non-ambulatory patients who may need to be transported through the system on a backboard utilizing a roller transport system.

The decontamination process itself is broken into three stages:
• Gross decontamination and debris removal
• Full washing and rinsing
• Drying and final inspection prior to release or further medical treatment

The system is also equipped to safely contain contaminated runoff water. Water used during the decontamination process is collected and pumped into specialized containment bladders to prevent environmental contamination and allow for proper disposal.

“This type of training is critical because these incidents are low frequency but high consequence,” said Attleboro Fire District Chief Scott Godin, who is also a member of the Massachusetts Hazardous Materials Response Team. “By training together with Sturdy Health staff, we ensure both organizations are familiar with the setup, patient movement, and operational flow should this system ever need to be deployed during a real-world emergency.”

The training comes as public safety agencies across the region continue preparations for large-scale events expected in the area, including the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup matches being hosted in nearby Foxborough. Communities throughout the region are reviewing emergency response capabilities and interagency coordination plans in anticipation of the significant increase in visitors and event attendance.

The Attleboro Fire Department regularly conducts joint training with healthcare and regional public safety partners to maintain readiness for a wide range of emergency incidents.

Attleboro Fire Department Paramedics to Volunteer at Free Youth Heart Screening Event: ATTLEBORO — The Attleboro Fire De...
05/03/2026

Attleboro Fire Department Paramedics to Volunteer at Free Youth Heart Screening Event: ATTLEBORO — The Attleboro Fire Department is proud to support a free youth heart screening
event aimed at identifying undiagnosed cardiac conditions and improving community safety.
The screening event, hosted by Sisters at Heart in partnership with Who We Play For, will take
place on Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Athletes Acceleration, 749 South Washington
St., North Attleboro. The event is open to students ages 10 to 25 and will provide free
electrocardiogram (ECG) screenings performed by medical professionals and interpreted by
board-certified cardiologists.

Attleboro Fire Department paramedics will be volunteering their time to assist with screenings
and support event operations.

Sudden cardiac arrest remains a leading cause of death among young athletes and on school
campuses nationwide. National heart health organizations report that approximately 1 in 300
youth have a detectable heart condition, and 80% of those affected have no symptoms prior
to a cardiac event.

The Attleboro Fire Department has long prioritized cardiac emergency preparedness within the
community. More than a decade ago, firefighter/paramedics launched “Heart Safe Schools”
program, through which firefighter-paramedics teach CPR, AED use, and life-saving skills to high
school freshmen each year.

“This event reflects the continued commitment of our firefighter-paramedics to protect the
community beyond emergency response,” said District Chief of EMS Steve Stellakis. “For more
than a decade, we have worked to make our schools and public spaces safer through CPR
training and AED awareness. Helping organizations like Sisters at Heart and Who We Play For
allows us to take another proactive step by helping identify potential heart conditions before an
emergency occurs.”

In October 2024, Sisters at Heart further strengthened community safety by donating eight
automated external defibrillators (AEDs) that were installed at public athletic fields and other
locations throughout Attleboro. Early CPR and rapid AED use are critical factors in improving
survival from sudden cardiac arrest.

Community partnerships, prevention programs, and screening opportunities like this event help
ensure families have access to tools and information that can save lives.
