The Attleboro Police Department wants to alert the public that Unemployment Fraud continues to be on the rise with approximately 140 reports of such fraud occurring just in Attleboro since April.

Residents have been receiving letters from the Department of Unemployment Assistance informing them that their claims for benefits have been accepted when they have not in fact filed for any state unemployment benefits.

We strongly encourage residents to keep an eye on their mail and financial accounts if you suspect you are a victim.

If you or someone you know receives this letter, we advise you to file a police report and to report fraudulent claims made in your name to the state via the link below:

As part of a national unemployment fraud scheme, criminal enterprises are using stolen personal information to try to file fraudulent unemployment claims. If you believe someone has applied for unemployment benefits using your personal information, use this secure form to report this to the Departme...

On September 7th at approximately 11:15 PM, APD officers responded to the area of Cedar and Thacher Sts. for a report of two male parties attempting to break into a motor vehicle. A foot pursuit ensued during the investigation that resulted in the identification and arrest of 23-year-old Michael Brown of Woonsocket and the summons of a 16-year-old male from Pawtucket. A black backpack containing multiple stolen items was found nearby and both subjects were believed to be involved in at least nine car breaks in the area on that evening.

Five days earlier on Septemebr 2nd, residents in the area of South Main St. & Henshaw Ave. also reported nine car breaks and one car theft. 40-year-old Andrew Newberry of Dorchester was arrested in connection with this case after being found in possession of the stolen car in Randolph.

The city is currently experiencing a 14% increase in car breaks this year. With our society now more mobile than ever (and cheaper gas prices), offenders are willing to travel farther away to steal unsecured valuables from your vehicles. The APD would like to remind residents to lock their motor vehicles as thefts from cars are a crime of opportunity. Roughly 85% of all affected cars in the city over the last five years were left unlocked. Those thefts which resulted from a smashed car window were primarily parked in shopping plazas and / or public parking areas with valuables left in view. Please Lock It! Hide It! Keep It!
