It was a warm one out there yesterday.

While most people were trying to stay in the shade, Officer John Patterson was out handling a traffic collision, directing traffic, investigating the crash, and helping clear debris from the roadway.

With more than 20 years on the job, Officer Patterson understands that getting traffic moving again safely takes teamwork and sometimes a broom.

The video may only be a few seconds long, but it shows something we see every day. Our officers do whatever needs to be done to serve the people of Merced County.

Merced, meet your newest CHP officers.

Three new officers have joined the CHP Merced Area and are already out serving the communities of Merced County.

Officer Alejandro Moreno (ID 23256) comes to Merced after three years in Redwood City. Before becoming a CHP officer, he worked as a meat butcher and physical therapist aide. A Stanislaus State graduate, Alejandro and his wife are raising three daughters and are excited to call the Central Valley home.

Officer Jesus Quiralte (ID 23424) is no stranger to Merced County. Raised right here in Merced, he graduated from the CHP Academy in 2023 and has served in Contra Costa and Hollister-Gilroy. Now he’s returning home to serve the community that helped shape him.

Officer Armando Martinez (ID 23453) brings a unique background in education. He earned a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Fresno State and spent six years working with students, including at Madera Juvenile Hall and Madera High School. After assignments in Marin and Modesto, he’s now joining the Merced Area.

Each officer brings different experiences and perspectives, but they all share the same commitment to keeping Merced County safe.

Help us welcome Officers Moreno, Quiralte, and Martinez to the CHP Merced family.

If you see them out on patrol, drop a welcome message below.

Good morning, Merced County

June is here, and so is another Monday morning commute.

Whether you’re headed to work, school, or somewhere in between, take a few extra moments to make safety a priority. Buckle up, put the phone away, leave plenty of space between vehicles, and slow down.

Most collisions aren’t random events. They’re often the result of choices made behind the wheel.

As you start your week, we’d like to hear from you:

What’s the biggest challenge you see during your morning commute?

Speeding? Distracted driving? Following too closely? Something else?

Drop your thoughts in the comments below.

Have a safe Monday!

🚔 CHP Central Division officers worked tirelessly throughout the Memorial Day Holiday Enforcement Period to help keep California’s roadways safe.

During the enforcement period, officers issued 5,009 written citations, including:

✅ 397 seatbelt violations
🚗 3,048 speeding violations
🍺 183 DUI arrests

Tragically, despite enforcement efforts, there were still 3 fatal collisions during the holiday period. Two of those crashes involved unrestrained occupants, underscoring the critical importance of wearing a seatbelt every trip, every time.

Seatbelts save lives. Slow down, drive responsibly, and never drive impaired.

Cattle Training at Purple Tulip Ranch

CHP Merced recently participated in annual cattle-handling training at Purple Tulip Ranch in Merced County. As a predominantly rural area, Merced County frequently experiences incidents involving cattle on roadways. These situations can pose a serious hazard to motorists, making it essential for our officers to be prepared to respond safely and effectively.

During the training, officers learned proper livestock-handling techniques, discussed fence repair methods, and reviewed other important practices for keeping livestock secure and preventing animals from entering roadways.

A special thank you to Bob Erickson and N&S Tractor for hosting CHP Merced and providing valuable hands-on training opportunities for our officers. Partnerships like these help ensure we are prepared to serve our agricultural community while keeping our roadways safe.

Safety • Service • Security 🐄

Our CHP team was well represented during the 2026 Special Olympics Torch Run in Merced County. We are honored to serve as the “Guardians of the Flame.” Thank you to Special Olympics Northern California for allowing us to continue this great tradition of carrying the torch in support of these incredible athletes.

A special thank you to our very own athlete, Mark, who has consistently helped us carry the torch and reminds us why we are such proud supporters of this cause.

We look forward to seeing all of our partners and runners again next year. Let’s continue carrying the torch!
