⚠️ The updated pest alert is now online! Southern and Beet Armyworms are way ahead of the Fall and Yellowstriped armyworm in terms of moth catches, but they all could be feeding on your produce or row crops. To***co budworm pressure is universal throughout the state but corn earworms are more active in the SW and SE corners of the state. Remember to use Bt, pyrethrin or Spinosad based organic products for caterpillar control. Pyrethrin and Spinosad can also reduce immatures stink bugs and leaffooted bugs (adults more difficult to control). Use the Farming Basics Phone App to look up the basic organic/conventional treatment insect control options. Don’t quit organic treatments too soon! Stop using conventional products once insect populations go down - use selective chemicals when you can to reduce risk of spider mites!! 🛑 Read more at

All this conversation around Fall Armyworms is making other insects very jealous, I believe! 😆 Anyway. Please make sure you click and share the updated IPM recommendations in https://www.aces.edu/blog/topics/crop-production/2021-alabama-pest-report/. If there is a shortage of conventional insecticides, then remember that Bt-based products (e.g., Xentari) are very effective against armyworms, and they can be tank-mixed or rotated with other organic insecticides. Unfortunately, the weather has turned hot and some oil-based insecticides may cause plant burn. Spray in the evening hours when it is cooler (and bees are less active)!

Think Prevention to Control Spider Mites on Peanuts With a limited number of miticides registered for use on peanuts, the best method to control spider mites is to minimize infestations. Flight of the VBC (velvetbean caterpillar) moths in peanuts! Caterpillar numbers rising now which is pretty common. Moth populations crash after hurricanes/excessive rains based on past observations - they take time to build back in peanuts making the crop look grazed!!
