While our people are adjusting to the shifting weather and getting ready to go back to school, the wildlife in our region are preparing for fall as well. Congresswoman Kim Schrier visited the Muckleshoot Early Learning Academy earlier this month, meeting with Muckleshoot Indian Tribe leaders and staff to learn more about the Tribe’s Head Start program and the work being done to support the health, education and overall well-being of Muckleshoot children and families. Muckleshoot Tribal Chairman Donny Stevenson and Tribal Councilmembers Virginia Cross and Eileen Richardson joined Early Childhood Education staff in welcoming Schrier to the Academy and sharing the history and continued importance of Head Start in the Muckleshoot Community.

The visit highlighted how partnerships between Tribal programs are helping remove barriers to services for families. It also showcased a model built around the idea that preparing children for school means caring for the whole child, from their education and physical health to their emotional well-being and connection to community.

We are looking forward to celebrating our ongoing partnership with the Seattle Mariners and our enduring presence in our traditional homeland of Seattle at the Mariners Native American Heritage Night on August 24. Muckleshoot will represent, with the Muckleshoot Canoe Family performing during pre-game festivities, the Muckleshoot Canoe on display in Center Field Plaza, and Muckleshoot TV commercials showing in the stadium before and during the game.

This past weekend, Muckleshoot Tribal Council Secretary Jessica Garcia-Jones and Councilmember Louie Ungaro traveled to San Diego, California, to represent the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) Leader’s Circle Weekend and Issues Conference at Torrey Pines.

Our Tribal leaders connected with congressional leaders and candidates from across the country, bringing Muckleshoot priorities to the table, including protecting our treaty rights and salmon, Tribal sovereignty and gaming, and federal policies and funding that impact our people.

Showing up in these spaces and building these relationships helps ensure Muckleshoot voices are heard and our rights are protected for generations to come.

We are proud of our leaders for continuing to advocate for our people and our future.
