Today, we want to recognize Chief Heffelfinger and thank him for his leadership, dedication, and commitment to the Auburn Police Department and the community we proudly serve.

Being a leader means more than holding a title. It means setting an example, supporting your officers, making difficult decisions, and always striving to serve and protect the community. We appreciate the time, effort, and heart you put into leading our department and keeping our community safe.

What is Leading Safer Communities — and who is it for? 🧐

Leading Safer Communities is a practical, scenario-based leadership development pilot created for public safety professionals across Northern Indiana.

It is designed for people working in or directly supporting public safety, including law enforcement, fire, EMS, dispatch, corrections, emergency management, campus or school public safety and civilian support roles.

You do not need to hold a formal supervisory title to apply.

This customized experience is for:

👉🏽emerging leaders
👉🏽new supervisors
👉🏽experienced leaders
👉🏽people who regularly influence others without formal authority
👉🏽professionals who want to strengthen how they communicate, make decisions, build trust, hold people accountable, coach others and lead under pressure

The inaugural pilot will be held December 11 in Auburn, Indiana, in partnership with Auburn Police Department and with support from the NIPSCO NiSource Charitable Foundation. The leadership scenarios will be focused on what public safety leaders are facing today.

There is no cost to participate.

Applications close November 6. Space is limited and applying does not guarantee a seat.

UPDATE: Male has been located.

The Auburn Police Department is attempting to locate this male who left on foot around the area of Parkview DeKalb around 8:20 am this morning. He was last seen wearing denim carpenter jeans, a tie dye shirt with black suspenders, and walks with a cane. The male is believed to be in danger and may require medical assistance. 🎡 Fair week is almost here! 🎡

Heading to the fair with your family? A little preparation can help make your day safer and more enjoyable! Here are a few tips.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Have a meeting spot: Before enjoying the fair, choose a specific location where everyone can meet if your group gets separated. Pick an easy-to-find landmark and make sure your children know where it is.

📸 Take a photo before you go: Take a current picture of your child before leaving home. If you become separated, you’ll have an up-to-date photo showing exactly what your child was wearing that day.

👕 Remember what they're wearing: Make note of your child’s clothing, shoes, and any distinctive items they may have with them.

📱 Keep important information handy: Make sure your phone is charged and that children know their parent/guardian’s name and how to contact them. Younger children can carry a card with a parent or guardian’s contact information.

👮 Teach children who they can ask for help: Point out uniformed police officers, fair security personnel, and other trusted adults working at the event.

🚸 Stay together: Keep younger children within sight and establish a buddy system for older children.

⚠️ If your child becomes separated from you, notify fair personnel or law enforcement immediately. Don't wait to see if they return on their own.

Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the fair!

A few minutes of preparation can make a big difference.

Looking forward to this program!

We’re excited to announce that Core Leadership Academy is partnering with Auburn Police Department for the inaugural pilot program "Leading Safer Communities."

Funded by the NIPSCO NiSource Charitable Foundation, this Northern Indiana public safety leadership pilot is designed to strengthen the practical leadership skills officers and public safety leaders rely on every day — communication, decision making, trust, accountability and leading under pressure.

Auburn Police Department is collaborating with us to launch this work by bringing public safety professionals together, sharing real world leadership challenges and helping shape a model grounded in the realities of the profession.

What we learn through this pilot will help us understand what works, what needs refinement and what may be useful for other public safety agencies across Northern Indiana.

We’re proud to begin this work with Auburn PD this December.
