WHERE THE $$$ GOES!
Just to recap--the money will go to re-staff the Dog Bar Station (currently closed) by hiring six firefighter paramedics, and current staff will be shuffled so that each shift at each station will have a paramedic.
The main purpose of this is to enhance response times. Currently, the Higgins Fire District response time averages 8-13 minutes whereas the recommended response time is 6-8 minutes. Reopening the Dog Bar Station will bring us back close to the recommended response time because it will end the "chess game" of having to have an engine go from the Combie Station to cover the Dog Bar area (13 minutes average), and then the engine from the McCourtney area (20 away) come to the Combie area to cover there where the majority of the residents of the district live. (Meanwhile, no response team is close to the McCourtney side of the district.)
Adding the paramedics who can do so much more then the EMTs we currently have on board each engine will deliver the life-saving services of 30-40 meds, intubation, IV meds, EKG scans, and advanced airway management before the ambulance arrives. 65% of the calls are for medical emergencies.
86.5% of the funds raised from a Yes vote on Measure I will cover re-staffing the Dog Bar Station and the stipends for the paramedic hires, the rest will go to buy the supplies and services necessary to run the station.
Please vote Yes on Measure I as this upgrade is sorely needed and there is no other source of funding for it!
