Healthy forests help support healthy communities!

Work completed near Little Grass Valley Reservoir reduced wildfire risk around roads, recreation areas, and important infrastructure in Plumas County. These efforts also helped improve forest health and long-term resilience.

As we approach the end of Wildfire Preparedness Month, projects like this show what is possible when local partners work together to protect the places people depend on every day.

What will it take to build healthier, more resilient forests in California?

SNC’s Policy & Outreach Division Chief Brittany Covich recently joined a PPIC discussion exploring the science, partnerships, and large-scale strategies needed to address growing wildfire risks across the state.

“California is a fire-prone state,” said Covich. “We have to continue the momentum of the last decade with sustained funding to deal with wildfire at a systemic level. We should keep encouraging burning and Tribally led stewardship. If it is a state priority—and it is—it’s a whole-of-California problem and it needs a whole-of-California solution.”

Improvements at Buckeye Hot Springs helped make this popular Sierra destination safer and more accessible while protecting nearby natural resources.
