Today, two of our three motors lead races at Swanson Road Intermediate School. The twenty fastest females and the twenty fastest males all raced for first place. As far as we are concerned, they are all winners as they had to earn the right to race!! We hear there was even a little friendly competition between Detective Chipman and Officer Brooks! 🏃 🏃‍♂️ Great job by all!

See Something. Say Something.

Last Friday, May 29, 2026, a passenger on a WRTA bus traveling through Auburn noticed something that didn't seem right. The person sitting across from them appeared to be handling what looked like a firearm and loading a magazine while riding the bus. To make matters worse that same person appeared to be heavily intoxicated.

Rather than assuming it was nothing, they discreetly texted 911.

Auburn Police Officers located and stopped the bus, investigated the situation, and safely secured the individual involved.

The individual was identified as 50 year old Donald Wessman of Worcester. During the investigation, officers determined that the weapon was a realistic-looking air-powered BB gun.

But here's the important part:

The reporting party didn't know it was a BB gun.

Neither would anyone else on that bus.

From a passenger's perspective, a realistic-looking BB gun being handled on public transportation is going to cause alarm, and rightfully so. The passenger saw something concerning, reported it, and allowed police officers to determine what was actually going on.

That's exactly what "See Something, Say Something" means.

No one expects members of the public to investigate suspicious behavior. We expect them to report it.

As a result of his actions, Donald Wessman was arrested and charged with:
• Disorderly Conduct on a Public Conveyance (M.G.L. c. 272, § 43)
• Disturbing the Peace, Subsequent Offense (M.G.L. c. 272, § 53)

If you see something that doesn't seem right, trust your instincts and report it. We'd much rather investigate a situation that turns out to be nothing than miss one that turns out to be something.

While the weather didn't exactly cooperate this morning, the rain stopped just in time for the start of Auburn's Memorial Day Parade.

The Auburn Police Department is honored to take part in this annual tradition as our community comes together to remember and pay tribute to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

Thank you to everyone who lined the parade route, participated in today's events, and helped ensure that the true meaning of Memorial Day remains at the forefront of our hearts and minds.

It has been a decade since Officer Ronald Tarentino Jr., a son, a brother, a husband, a father, and our friend, was killed in the line of duty on May 22, 2016.

Ron’s dream was to be a police officer, and he fulfilled that dream, first with the Leicester Police Department and then with the Auburn Police Department, serving proudly for a combined nine years. He loved what he did, and we loved working alongside him. Ron had an incredible work ethic, integrity, compassion, and a presence that made even the hardest days seem okay.

The pain of losing Ron will never fully go away. There is no anniversary that makes it easier and no amount of time that makes it make sense. Ten years later, we still talk about him daily, sharing his stories because he truly was larger than life. Those of us who served alongside him still proudly wear his badge number on our uniforms, and we will keep his memory alive for generations to come. The Auburn Police Department has now reached the point where there are more officers who never had the chance to hear him sing “Workin’ on the night brew” (to the tune of Night Moves) while making the shift a pot of coffee, than those who did.

So today, ten years later, we remember the night Auburn changed forever, but we also remember what came after it, Ron’s larger-than-life legacy. We remember the officer who loved his job, the father whose heart lives on in his sons, the friend who made people laugh, and the man whose name now lives on through a bridge, a road race, scholarships, acts of kindness, and every person helped in his memory.

Today, we remember his sacrifice and celebrate his life, because let’s be honest, he was kind of a big deal.
