🚒 Training Day in the DarkHorse Area 🚒

This afternoon, the on-duty crews from Higgins Station 23 and Station 22 spent time sharpening their skills with some firefighter operator training in the DarkHorse area.

Crews practiced changeovers while hooking to a hydrant, ensuring smooth transitions and reliable water supply during real emergency operations. Training like this keeps our firefighters ready to respond quickly and effectively when our community needs us most.

Great work to everyone involved! 👏🔥

🚒 Red Ribbon Week at Cottage Hill School! 🚓🚑

Today, students at Cottage Hill School had some very special visitors! Higgins Fire District, CHP, and the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office stopped by to help celebrate Red Ribbon Week and teach students about safety and community service.

Our on-duty crews from Station 22 and Station 23 spent the morning showing students from TK through 5th grade what a firefighter looks like in full gear and what to do in case of a fire at home. The kids even got to explore the inside of a fire engine and try their hand at spraying some water! 💦

A huge thank you to Cottage Hill School for the warm welcome, and to all the students for their enthusiasm and great questions. 🔥❤️

📸🔥 Meet Board Chairman Richard Thickens 🔥📸

Richard Thickens is the Chairman of the Board for Higgins Fire Protection District. With more than 40 years in fire service—from wildland firefighting with CalFire in 1976, to serving as a Battalion Chief, and even leading a rural department as Chief—Richard has dedicated his life to protecting communities. 🚒

Now in his second term on the Higgins Board, he helps guide:
✅ Finance & budgeting
✅ Hiring, promotions & personnel support
✅ Fire prevention & community safety

💬 “You don’t have to fight fire to volunteer. There are many ways to serve—whether that’s learning CPR, joining a CERT team, fundraising, or supporting youth programs.” – Richard

When he’s not serving the district, Richard enjoys golf at Dark Horse ⛳, farming 🌱, classic cars 🚗, boating ⛵, and spending time with his family, including grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. ❤️

We’re thankful for his leadership, passion, and lifelong commitment to our community. 🙌

🌟 Board Member Spotlight: Bruce Jones 🌟

Higgins Fire is proud to highlight Bruce Jones, who has been serving our community as a member of the Higgins Fire District Board since 2006. Re-elected every four years, Bruce brings a lifetime of fire service experience and leadership to our district.

As a board member, Bruce has held roles as both Chair and Vice Chair, led the Strategic Planning Committee and the Policies & Procedures Committee, and worked tirelessly to ensure our budget is managed responsibly while maintaining the best possible services for our community.

Bruce’s background in fire service runs deep—starting in the early 70s as a paid call firefighter, he went on to serve with CDF/Orange County Fire and later the Hayward Fire Department, where he was promoted to Captain in 1984 before retiring in 2003. With over 200 college credits in fire-related courses, Bruce continues to dedicate his expertise to serving Higgins Fire.

One of Bruce’s proudest accomplishments is helping secure funding to reopen Station 22 in the Dog Bar area, which had been closed since 2015 due to budget constraints. In 2023, thanks to the community’s support, the station was reopened.

Outside of board service, Bruce enjoys spending time with his wife’s family, his daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He keeps in touch with his firefighting friends, is active in the local SIRS organization, and recently began meeting with veterans in Lake of the Pines. In his free time, he enjoys watching ball games and traveling to Hawaii.

Bruce encourages our community to get to know the board and the work being done by visiting a local station, checking out the minutes on the Higgins Fire website, or stopping by the office with any questions.

🙏 Thank you, Bruce, for your years of service and dedication to both the fire service and the Higgins community!

🌟 Board Member Spotlight: Marty Main 🌟

Meet Marty Main, our 2025 Vice Chairperson of the Higgins Fire Board of Directors. Marty has proudly served a combined 7 years on the Board and will step into the role of Chairperson in 2026.

Marty’s role includes providing strategic direction and financial oversight for the district. He has also contributed by supporting the district’s website and making fire dispatch radio traffic accessible to the public online.

After retirement, Marty was inspired to give back to the community, especially by helping to reduce fire insurance costs and promoting Fire Safe programs. He even helped create a Fire Safe community in his neighborhood, increasing both safety and insurance savings.

Though his firefighting background was brief—serving as a college “resident fireman” (AKA Sleeper)—his commitment to supporting fire safety has been long-lasting.

Marty encourages community members to:
✅ Support local firefighters and the district
✅ Maintain defensible space and practice home hardening
✅ Plan and practice family evacuations and ensure clear emergency exit routes

One of his proudest moments as a board member was helping set strategic goals for Higgins Fire, including securing funding to reopen Station 22 (Dog Bar Road) and expand staffing to better protect our community.

When not serving the district, Marty enjoys camping, off-road adventures, fishing, hiking, and family time with his grandchildren. He’s also active in Amateur (Ham) Radio—even making contact with the International Space Station! 🚀📡

Thank you, Marty, for your years of service and dedication to keeping our community safe! 👏🔥

✨ Board Member Spotlight – Chairman Janice Buschmann ✨

Higgins Fire is proud to highlight Chairman Janice Buschmann, who has been serving on the Board for the past 5–6 years.

Chairman Buschmann plays a key role in monitoring, evaluating, and approving (or denying) the many different aspects of running a fire district. Her journey onto the board began when her husband, a former board member, had to step down due to health reasons—Janice stepped up to continue that service.

Her background includes first responder training during her time working in a refinery, giving her a unique perspective on safety and emergency response. When asked what advice she has for the community, she says:

👉 “Educate yourselves! Talk to a firefighter and thank them!”

Director Buschmann’s proudest moment? Seeing her son become Chief of Higgins Fire. ❤️

Beyond the fire district, she is actively involved with Scouting America (formerly BSA), with four of her grandkids currently participating. She’s also an animal lover, cares for her soon-to-be 100-year-old mother who lives with her in the district, and of course, is proud to support her son—the Chief.

Thank you, Chairman Buschmann, for your years of service, dedication, and leadership in our community! 🙌🔥

Today, Higgins Fire on-duty crews paid tribute to the 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001.

Each year, we pause to remember the courage and selflessness shown that day, and to honor the lives lost in the line of duty. This morning, our firefighters chose to honor them through action:

🔥 Station 22 completed 343 squats.
🔥 Station 23 performed 343 lunges on air.

These numbers represent more than just repetitions—they represent the bravery, dedication, and sacrifice of 343 brothers and sisters in the fire service who never came home.

As a department, we stand committed to ensuring their memory lives on, and to serving our community with that same spirit of courage and resolve.

We will never forget. 🇺🇸🚒🕊️

🚒 Firefighter Spotlight: Lawrence Huon 🔥👨‍🍳🇺🇸

Meet Lawrence Huon, a dedicated firefighter with Higgins Fire who’s been serving with us for the past 2 years. Before joining Higgins, Lawrence spent a season gaining valuable experience with Cal Fire LNU, and graduated from the Sierra College Regional Fire Academy, Class 22-2.

Certified as an EMT, Lawrence is committed to growing every day in the fire service. When asked why he serves, he humbly shared:
"Having spent 10 years in the restaurant industry, I've learned that quick thinking and teamwork are just as crucial in a kitchen as they are on the fireground. From handling high-pressure situations during a dinner rush to coordinating with my fellow cooks, the skills I've honed in the culinary world have definitely prepared me for the challenges of firefighting."
Lawrence is also known around the station as our unofficial department chef, always keeping the crew well-fed and fueled! 👨‍🍳

Currently a Rocklin resident, Lawrence brings a unique and inspiring story to our team.
Fun fact: Lawrence balances firefighting with a passion for gaming and a background in sushi—his teammates appreciate both. Catch him off duty

Lawrence, your strength, dedication, and spirit are truly appreciated. We’re honored to have you as part of our fire family.
