Members of the Cayuga County Hazardous Materials Response Team conducted their monthly training yesterday, focusing on recent incidents and real-world response operations.

The training began with a review of the team’s last two hazardous materials incidents, allowing members to discuss response actions, lessons learned, and operational improvements.

Crews then participated in a hands-on scenario that was initially dispatched as a routine EMS call. Upon arrival, responders were required to recognize indicators of a potential hazardous materials incident, establish command, perform victim rescues and request additional HazMat Team resources.

During the exercise, a team was deployed to identify an unknown substance while utilizing multiple methods of material identification. Wireless air monitoring technology was used throughout the scenario, allowing real-time readings and findings to be transmitted directly back to the command post to assist with decision making and responder safety.

Following the entry and identification phase, the decontamination sector conducted technical decontamination procedures for the entry team before the scenario was terminated.

The Cayuga County Hazardous Materials Response Team is comprised of members from the City of Auburn along with firefighters from departments across Cayuga County. The team and its equipment are funded through Cayuga County to provide specialized hazardous materials response capabilities throughout the region.

Training never stops at the Auburn Fire Department.

Over the past several shifts, on-duty crews have been spending time reviewing and training with specialized rescue equipment carried on our apparatus. Saturday, crews conducted a low-angle rescue scenario utilizing the Arizona Vortex, capstan system, ropes, rigging equipment, and rescue basket operations.

Earlier last week, firefighters also trained on additional rescue and support equipment including the capstan winch, confined space air cart, SCBA/SCBA-pack operations, portable lighting, and generators carried on Rescue 1.

Regular hands-on training ensures our members remain prepared to safely and effectively handle a wide variety of emergency incidents our community may face. Great work by all crews continuing to sharpen their skills and stay ready for the next call.

The Auburn Fire Department mourns the passing of our longtime Chaplain, Fr. James Enright, who answered his final alarm on April 29, 2026, at the age of 83.
Fr. Enright served faithfully as Chaplain to the Auburn Fire Department for many years, providing unwavering support, guidance, and compassion to our members during some of the most difficult moments we face. Whether responding alongside us to tragic incidents, offering prayers at fire scenes, or standing shoulder to shoulder with our firefighters at the annual Firefighter Memorial Service, Father Enright was a steady and comforting presence.
Ordained in 1969 for the Diocese of Buffalo, Fr. Enright came to Auburn in 1972 and dedicated over five decades of service to this community. In addition to his parish work, he also served as Chaplain at Auburn Correctional Facility and with the Knights of Columbus. His ministry extended far beyond the church walls, touching countless lives throughout the city.
To the members of this department, he was more than a chaplain—he was a trusted friend, a source of strength, and a constant reminder of faith in times of hardship.
We thank Fr. Enright for his years of dedicated service to the fire service and the Auburn community. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to live on in the lives he touched.
