NEWS RELEASE — SCAM ALERT
The Logan County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about an active and increasingly convincing phone scam involving individuals falsely identifying themselves as deputies with the Logan County Sheriff’s Office.
The scammers tell victims they have an outstanding warrant or are involved in a criminal or court matter and that a bond or payment must be made immediately to avoid arrest. Victims are then instructed to purchase gift cards or withdraw cash and deposit it through an ATM or cryptocurrency/Bitcoin ATM.
These scammers are going even further. They may use the name of an actual Logan County deputy and send victims photographs, text messages, or fraudulent documents made to appear official in an effort to make the scam believable.
Do not be fooled by a deputy’s name, a photograph, caller ID, or a document sent to your phone.
The Logan County Sheriff’s Office does not conduct business this way. We will not call you and demand immediate payment to prevent your arrest. We will not require you to purchase gift cards, withdraw cash, or deposit money into an ATM to resolve a warrant, bond, or criminal matter.
If you receive one of these calls, hang up. Do not argue with the caller, do not send money, and do not provide personal or financial information.
After hanging up, please contact Logan County Dispatch at 270-726-4911 (tel:270-726-4911) to report the incident and verify any claim involving our office.
The Logan County Sheriff’s Office is aware of these incidents and is working with federal agencies as part of the investigation.
These individuals rely on fear and urgency. They want you to believe you must act immediately before you have an opportunity to think or verify what they are telling you.
Please remember: If someone claiming to be a Logan County deputy demands money and threatens you with immediate arrest, hang up and call us yourself.
We would much rather you call and verify the situation than lose your hard-earned money to someone pretending to represent our office.
Please share this warning, especially with elderly family members, friends, and neighbors who may be particularly vulnerable to these scams.
