This month, I am taking some time to think about our work to lower everyday costs for Maine families and support our state’s hardest workers. Several bills that I sponsored were signed into law, tackling issues ranging from rising childcare and food costs to the health of Maine workers.

By Senator Henry Ingwersen, District 32

May 28, 2026, Now that the Legislature has adjourned for the year, I am taking some time to think about our work to lower everyday costs for Maine families and support our state’s hardest workers. Several bills that I sponsored were signed into law, tackling issues ranging from rising childcare and food costs to the health of Maine workers.

One of my top priorities was helping families access quality, affordable childcare in their communities – without breaking the bank. As the Senate chair of the Health and Human Services Committee, I worked to support the childcare businesses and providers that are the anchors of Maine communities — I sometimes refer to them as the “workforce behind the workforce.” My new law, LD 1728, lowers the co-pays for families participating in the Child Care Affordability Program. It also ensures that providers are being reimbursed fairly when families use the program. It’s a win-win that helps keep the doors open to childcare centers like St. Louis Child Development Center in Biddeford or the Arundel Children's Garden.

It’s time to cast a line!

This weekend, May 30 and 31, any person (except those whose license has been suspended or revoked) may fish without a license. All other laws and regulations apply on these days.

I’m proud to have sponsored LD 2144, which has created a working group to look at the wellness and mental health needs of our hard-working farmers, loggers, and fishermen and women . They begin tomorrow, May 29

Not sure if you all remember, but there was a day back in January that we told you about how we went down to Augusta to testify in favour of LD 2144: Establish the Working Group to Prioritize Wellness and Mental Health Resources for Heritage Industries.
So many of you reached out to ask how to advocate for this legislation and we truly appreciated that support because supporting this bill meant you have our backs. Thank you!

We are so proud and encouraged to report that this bill did pass and the Working Group is already up and running and will have its first meeting this week.

We just wanted you to know that voices carry and work gets done, whether in the field, barn, and even in Augusta. And folks, we spend a lot of time complaining about Augusta but the fact is some of the heaviest and most dedicated lifts for this effort came from the people in Augusta. We Maine farmers are very fortunate to have legislators like Senator Henry Ingwersen and Working Group Co-Chair Emily Horton who are so committed to strengthening and supporting our communities and our Heritage Industries.

See more information in the comments about the Working Group and the meetings.

And folks, thanks for your support. We will never stop having your backs too.

As the Senate chair of the Health and Human Services Committee and a grandfather, I was proud to sponsor this timely new childcare law. It will help hardworking Mainers build their lives and raise families of their own right here in Maine. There is no workforce without access to affordable childcare.

Earlier this month, the federal government repealed a Biden-era rule that lowered childcare costs for the average American.

We saw this coming. This year, the Maine Legislature passed Senator Henry Ingwersen's bill that protects Maine families and childcare providers by putting those cost-lowering provisions into Maine law.

Tune in if you can: The first meeting will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, May 29. 🐓🐟🪵

The people who work in Maine’s heritage industries help feed our communities, steward working lands and waters, and sustain a way of life deeply connected to Maine’s identity. But the pressures carried by those in agriculture, fishing, forestry, and logging are too often faced quietly and alone.

This new working group represents an important step toward strengthening mental health and wellness support for the people behind these industries. By bringing together leaders from agriculture, marine resources, and health services, the effort will help identify gaps, reduce stigma, and build practical pathways to care that reflect the realities of life and work in Maine’s rural and working communities.

Today we marched in the Biddeford-Saco Memorial Day Parade in honor of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to our country. A big thanks to the volunteers, city officials, musicians from Thornton and Biddeford, all
of the marchers, parade observers, Grand Marshall Don Chretien and Navy veteran Kayla Lewis for her great speech. There was strong community spirit on this solemn day in the pouring rain.
