Hello All,
Now that we are starting to get a handle on the destruction of the snowmobile trails caused by the December 18 storm, we want to give a current update on the trails. Clubs have costs of repairs well into the millions of dollars in bridge, culvert, and trail washout damage. The wind hitting the whole state has caused at least another $1 million in clean-up. This damage will take time to repair, and snowmobile trails must be built to connect our communities.
Because of the many generous landowners, volunteers, and willing contractors, dozens of bridges and culverts have been repaired to open the main snowmobile trails once the snow is here. There is still a lot of work to be done, and if you ride a snowmobile and use these trails, the clubs could use your help. Please be prepared for re-routes of ITS and locally used snowmobile trails.
Once the snow does get here, many of the state's 14,000 miles of snowmobile trails will open for a great riding season. If anyone needs specific reports on a certain area, I'd encourage them to contact the local snowmobile club. In many parts of Central and Western Maine, plan to encounter trails that have been re-routed.
