UMA Social Science Program These programs are offered at sites across Maine and online. Social Sciences are disciplines whose origin can be traced back to the 19th century.

The Social Science Program at UMA offers a degree, minors, concentrations and certification programs based upon the scientific study of humans, societies and cultures. Within scientific disciplines the philosophy of science, the natural and physical sciences as well as the social sciences are older fields. In the 20th and 21st centuries many 'new' classifications of sciences have proliferated as f

ields of application have increased (e.g. behavioral, information, etc.) The social sciences encompass multiple fields of scholarship, research and professional preparation. The social sciences have in common four basic components: i) a shared history; ii) the use of scientific methods; iii) a concern for ethical practice and iv) a focus on aspects of individual and collective human nature.
