The Graduate School Book Club will be meeting in June to discuss "Red City" by Marie Lu. The Club will meet on Thursday, June 18. You do not have to complete the book, to attend the club.

"In the 1980s, a pair of alchemists succeeded in creating the Philosopher’s Stone and distilled it into a powerful drug called sand, which “enhances everything about who you are.” The use of this performance-enhancing drug underpinned the creative tech boom of the decades that followed and led to the development of fabulously wealthy, fiercely competitive, often criminal, and deeply secretive alchemical guilds. In present-day Angel City, two childhood friends keep parallel secrets: Ari was recruited away from his family in India to train with the powerful Lumines syndicate as a master of charisma; Sam’s search for a solution to her single mom’s financial desperation led her to discover an aptitude for transformations and become a star student within rival syndicate Grand Central.

Lu puts these two on a collision course as they both rise in the ranks of their respective organizations, whose violence against each other simultaneously ramps up. Lu builds a rich alternate present that pulls tropes from both magic school and crime drama literary traditions to tell an addictive double “chosen one” story that successfully keeps readers’ sympathies divided. It’s truly enthralling." (Publisher's overview).

The Reese Reads Undergraduate Book Club will meet on Wednesday, June 17 at Reese to discuss Holly Gramazio's "The Husbands." You do not have to complete the book to attend.

The book summary: "When Lauren returns home to her flat in London late one night, she is greeted at the door by her husband, Michael. There’s only one problem—she’s not married. She’s never seen this man before in her life. But according to her friends, her much-improved decor, and the photos on her phone, they’ve been together for years.

As Lauren tries to puzzle out how she could be married to someone she can’t remember meeting, Michael goes to the attic to change a lightbulb and abruptly disappears. In his place, a new man emerges, and a new, slightly altered life re-forms around her. Realizing that her attic is creating an infinite supply of husbands, Lauren confronts the question: If swapping lives is as easy as changing a lightbulb, how do you know you’ve taken the right path? When do you stop trying to do better and start actually living?"

Hey grad students! Now that the spring semester is over, are you working on your summer reading goals? Come join us (the AU Libraries and The Grad School) for our monthly Graduate School Book Club meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 28 at the Greenblatt Library. Our special guest this month is Dr. Maggy Tomova, Provost and EVP of Academic Affairs. We'll discuss her book pick: The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein.

“Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver. Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through.

A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life ... as only a dog could tell it” (publisher’s summary).

Hey undergrads! Get a start on your summer reading by joining the Reese Reads Book Club at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, at the Reese Library as we discuss “The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida” by Shehan Karunatilaka. Come join us even if you don’t finish the book (and snacks will be served).

“Colombo, 1990. Maali Almeida—war photographer, gambler, and closet queen—has woken up dead in what seems like a celestial visa office. His dismembered body is sinking in the serene Beira Lake and he has no idea who killed him. In a country where scores are settled by death squads, su***de bombers, and hired goons, the list of suspects is depressingly long, as the ghouls and ghosts with grudges who cluster round can attest. But even in the afterlife, time is running out for Maali. He has seven moons to contact the man and woman he loves most and lead them to the photos that will rock Sri Lanka (publisher’s summary)”

The Poetry, Music, and Relaxation Series met at the end of April, and we were treated to live music thanks to Atiya Barnes who played snippets of “Sonata No.3” by Handel and “Allegro” by Joseph-Hector Fiocco on her violin. Local poet Lucinda Clark read her original poem “I Know,” which was freshly written as of that morning!

Dr. Soma Mukhopadhyay, Assistant Professor of Biology, read “Zebra Question” by Shel Silverstein and her original poem “Twilight Sky.” One of the students in the group read two of her original, untitled poems. Themes within the poem were about choices made in life and the longing for home and family and this was the first time this student had shared her writings with anyone! Another student read a short poem by Leonard Nimoy (aka Star Trek’s Spock) simply titled, “Because.”

Aspasia Luster, Student Success Librarian, read “The Garden” and “The Field” by Shelomo ibn Gabirol from The Dream of the Poem: Hebrew Poetry from Muslim and Christian Spain, 950-1492, translated and edited by Peter Cole (and available for checkout from the Reese Library). The Poetry, Music, and Relaxation Series will return in the Fall 2026 semester.
