Barring an enrollment change of a legislator, our office will continue to remain closed for two more years.

We are looking forward to Tuesday's election to see if we will be reopening our minority office in the State House in January.
We are a public office of the Legislature, temporarily closed until there is another Green Independent in the House.
As such, we do not campaign or advocate for or against any candidates.
We wish "all" candidates well on Tuesday!

Public Notice: There is a vacancy in House District 52, which will be filled in a special election. Gov. Janet Mills will be issuing an order for political parties to caucus to nominate candidates to appear on the ballot.

AUGUSTA -- State Rep. Jennifer DeChant, D-Bath, has announced her resignation from the Legislature, where she represents House District 52. The Green Independent House Minority Office is now closed. We thank our minority leader in 2018, State Rep. Ralph Chapman (G--Brooksville) for his service to his community and the state.
This office will open again one day. Until then... be green!

House could not muster vote to extend session. Finishing business will require special session, costing taxpayers $18,000 a day--only if State Rep. Chapman consents to a special session being convened.

Live update: The bell is ringing for House members to return from being 'at ease'. It remains to be seen whether House will extend their session, or put the ability to convene a special session into the hands of Green Independent Minority Leader Ralph Chapman.

If not extended, legal authority to convene special session requires State Rep. Ralph Chapman's consent as Green Independent member, per Maine's constitution: “The Legislature may convene at such other times on the call of the President of the Senate and Speaker of the House, with the consent of a majority of the Members of the Legislature of each political party, all Members of the Legislature having been first polled.”.

Unenrolled members' consent is not required to convene special sessions.

Live update: Currently the State House is struggling to determine whether it will extend the year's legislative session to complete unfinished business. If not extended, the State House can only convene a special session by order of the governor, or by consent of all House political parties, including the House Green Independent minority caucus. A session extension does not cost taxpayers extra, but a special session costs $18,000 a day because the representatives will receive extra pay.
House Green Independent Minority Leader Ralph Chapman has not confirmed that he would approve calling members in for a special session. Without his approval, a special session cannot be convened.
