MEDIA RELEASE
Date: February 25, 2026
Location: Highway 85 and Jackie Ann Street, Ault, Colorado
The Ault Police Department, in coordination with the Ault‑Pierce Fire Department, responded this afternoon to a vegetation fire near the intersection of Highway 85 and Jackie Ann Street.
Ault Officers discovered the fire while responding to a separate fire incident south of town. Upon locating the active vegetation fire along the roadway, officers notified fire personnel, and crews from the Ault‑Pierce Fire Department were immediately deployed. The fire, fueled by dry conditions and high winds, ultimately burned approximately 6.5 acres along a half‑mile stretch of Highway 85 before being contained.
Highway 85 was closed for approximately one hour while fire crews worked to extinguish the fire. One nearby business was evacuated for a short period as a precaution while responders brought the fire under control. No injuries have been reported, and no structures were damaged. Highway 85 has since reopened, and all evacuations have been lifted.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined by the Ault‑Pierce Fire Department.
The fire caused significant damage to nearby railroad infrastructure. Union Pacific Railroad is currently assessing the damage before the tracks are reopened.
We thank the Ault-Pierce Fire Department, Colorado Department of Transportation, Weld County Sheriff's Office, Union Pacific Railroad, Weld County Regional Communications Center, and the community for their cooperation during today’s response.
With dry conditions, high winds, and periods of Red Flag warnings across the region, the Ault Police Department reminds residents to use caution with any activity that may cause sparks or flames. Avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of smoking materials, and report smoke or fire immediately to help prevent wildfires during hazardous weather conditions.
