The Aurelia Police Department Reminds Community of Electric Scooter and E-Bike Safety for Children

The Aurelia Police Department has recently received several complaints regarding groups of young children operating electric scooters and electric bicycles in an unsafe manner throughout the community.

Reports indicate that many riders have been traveling at high speeds, failing to stop at stop signs, swerving in the roadway, operating after dark without proper lighting, and in some cases nearly causing traffic collisions. These behaviors create significant safety risks not only for the children involved, but also for motorists and other pedestrians.

The Aurelia Police Department wants the children in our community to enjoy being outside and participating in activities such as riding bikes and scooters. However, the safety of our children and everyone in the community must remain the top priority.

Parents and guardians are strongly encouraged to speak with their children about safe riding practices and to review local laws regarding the operation of electric scooters and electric bicycles. Ensuring that these devices are used responsibly, including obeying traffic signs, using proper lighting after dark, and riding in a predictable and safe manner, can help prevent serious accidents or injuries.

The Aurelia Police Department appreciates the cooperation of parents and community members in helping keep our children safe. By working together, we can ensure that riders continue to enjoy these activities while reducing the risk of a tragic outcome.

Hello, Aurelia!

Over the next several days, you may see Tristan Pugi, a college student from Estonia, visiting neighborhoods around town. Tristan is attending college in the United States and is helping pay for his education by selling educational materials door to door through Southwestern Advantage.

His goal is to introduce families to resources that may help support their children's education. If you're not interested, that's perfectly okay, just let him know, and he'll gladly wish you a good day and continue on his way.

For identification, Tristan will be driving a blue Hyundai with Southwestern Advantage logos displayed. The vehicle is bearing Oklahoma license plates.

REMINDER!

There has been an increased number of complaints regarding the operation of golf carts on city streets in a manner that is in violation of city ordinances and state laws.

These complaints include subjects not following the rules of the road, driving in a reckless manner, intoxicated drivers, unlicensed drivers, and child drivers.

We would like to encourage you to call in if you see violations of this or any other law or ordinance. Names, descriptions, and locations of these violators would help tremendously in identifying and addressing the issue. Remember effective policing requires police departments to partner with citizens to keep our town safe.

The City of Aurelia allows for the use of golf carts on the roadways. However, the following restrictions apply:

1: Golf carts may be operated upon the streets of the City of Aurelia, Iowa, except as prohibited in Section 82.02 of this chapter, by persons 16 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER.

2: Golf carts shall not be operated upon any City street which is a primary road extension through the City, to-wit: Iowa Highway No. 7. However, golf carts may cross such a primary road extension.

3: Golf carts operated upon City streets shall be equipped with a slow-moving vehicle sign and a bicycle safety flag or proper motor vehicle lighting if conditions warrant and at all times during operation shall have adequate brakes.

4: Golf carts may be operated on City streets only between sunrise and sunset.

5: The owner or operator of any golf cart upon the City streets within the City limits of the City of Aurelia, Iowa, must maintain and provide current proof of financial responsibility in accordance with Iowa Code Section 32l.20B of the Code of Iowa or equivalent coverage.

Please note that many of the complaints being relayed to us involve children driving these vehicles. Parents, please note that you are responsible for your children. Allowing unauthorized children to drive can result in you getting cited for Allowing an Unauthorized Person to Drive, and/or other more severe consequences if Allowing an Unauthorized Person to Drive results in an accident resulting in injury to your child or another.

Ray, a student at Alta-Aurelia high school, was recently diagnosed with cancer. As he and his family begin this journey, we want to help remind them they are not facing it alone.
