This week at the library, we're reading Senorita Mariposa, a sweet story about a little monarch butterfly's migration from Canada to Mexico. The text is in both English and Spanish, which is an awesome way for our students to have a little exposure to the language. K-3 students are making their own 3D butterflies, while 4 and 5 are creating "stained glass" butterfly sun catchers. Ask your kiddos about the Monarch Migration and the importance of milkweed plants!

This is the book we read for the first week of Hispanic Heritage Month. It's an award winning picture book about Hurricane Maria making landfall in Puerto Rico 6 years ago. Coquies are tree frogs with a strong cultural significance to the Puerto Rican people, and their population was almost wiped out by the hurricane. The book is a story of hope and perseverance, and the rebirth of both Puerto Rico and the precious frogs. Students listened to the story while coloring pictures of "alebrije-style" frogs. Ask them what they learned about Puerto Rico, about coqui frogs, and about having strong roots.
