On Memorial Day, May 25, 2026, a group of twelve officers from the Aurora Police Department and firefighters from Aurora Fire Rescue gathered at the City of Aurora Public Safety Training Center to take part in “The Murph” hero workout, honoring the sacrifices made by America’s fallen service members.
The event served not only as a challenging physical test, but also as a solemn reminder of the courage, dedication, and selflessness shown by members of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to the nation.
The Murph workout was created in honor of Lt. Michael P. Murphy, a U.S. Navy SEAL who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2005. Originally known as “Body Armor,” the workout was one of Murphy’s favorite training routines and was later renamed in his memory.
The workout consists of a 1-mile run, followed by 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, and concluding with another 1-mile run. Many participants complete the workout while wearing a weighted vest or body armor to further symbolize the physical burdens carried by military personnel and first responders in the line of duty.
Observed annually across the United States and around the world on Memorial Day, The Murph has become a tradition among military members, first responders, athletes, and civilians alike. Participants are pushed to their physical and mental limits, enduring fatigue, discomfort, and exhaustion as a symbolic tribute to those who endured far greater hardships in defense of others. For the Aurora officers and firefighters who took part, the workout stood for a shared commitment to service, resilience, and remembrance.
