A Taste of Italy at Bickford! 🍰

To celebrate Italian Day, our residents rolled up their sleeves and created a delicious homemade tiramisu together.

Inspired by Montessori principles, this hands-on activity encouraged residents to be active participants every step of the way. With ingredients thoughtfully prepared and displayed, each resident chose how they wanted to contribute, measuring, mixing, dipping, and layering at their own pace while using familiar skills and routines.

It was more than just making dessert. It was an opportunity to engage the senses, foster independence, build confidence, and enjoy meaningful connection with one another.

And the best part? Enjoying a sweet taste of Italy together at the end! ❤️

This week, we took our Residents on a little adventure to Italy without leaving Bickford! We enjoyed Italian trivia, virtual tours, and lots of delicious treats—including gelato! We made pizza sugar cookies, created Italy-themed crafts, and had a blast playing Italy Bingo. Our favorite part may have been chatting about personal memories and trips to Italy. Hearing our Residents share their stories, experiences, and favorite places made the week extra special. Through conversation, creativity, food, and meaningful experiences, we love finding ways to bring the world to our Residents and encourage purposeful engagement the Montessori way!

Listening Makes Us Better

At Bickford, we know families understand our residents in a unique way. That’s why every month we ask one meaningful question—simple, honest, and focused on what truly matters.

Their answers guide us.
They shape our care.
They keep our relationships personal and real.

Because here, care isn’t a checklist—it’s a connection.

COVID Clinic Coming to Bickford

The health and well-being of our residents remains a top priority. Bickford will be offering an onsite COVID-19 vaccination clinic for residents on September 17.

Older adults are at a higher risk for serious illness from COVID-19, making vaccination an important tool in helping protect their health and maintain their quality of life. In a senior living community, staying up to date on vaccinations can also help support the well-being of friends, neighbors, and loved ones.

Finding Her Strength Again

After experiencing memory changes, isolation, and a history of frequent falls, 92‑year‑old Verna was no longer thriving. She struggled with weight loss, recurrent UTIs, and occasional difficulty managing incontinence, relying heavily on her son for meals and daily support. Verna’s independence — something she deeply valued — began to slip away.

Bickford’s HigherPath approach brought the team together to help Verna regain strength, safety, and a renewed sense of purpose.
✅ HigherPath Council meetings closely monitored weight, blood pressure, meals, and activity participation
✅ Fox Rehab provided physical and occupational therapy, improving strength, balance, endurance, and safety with daily tasks
✅ Curana Health oversaw primary care and responded quickly to early signs of UTIs, reducing recurrence
✅ Caregivers supported consistent routines and frequent check‑ins, guided by a personalized nursing care plan
✅ Montessori Lifestyle programming re‑engaged Verna socially, including a meaningful role as a community tour guide

Today, Verna is living well — highly mobile, enjoying therapy, attending all three meals, and maintaining a healthy weight. Falls and UTIs have significantly decreased, and she feels connected, purposeful, and independent once again.

Verna’s family now has peace of mind, knowing she’s supported by a team walking alongside her on the Higher Path — where clinical excellence and compassionate, personalized care come together to help residents truly thrive.

🎶 Taking a Chance That Paid Off! 🎶

Sometimes the best discoveries happen when you take a chance. When Paul Horgash introduced himself during a restaurant outing months ago and asked to perform, we decided to give it a try, and we're so glad we did!

Paul wowed residents with his dulcimer, banjo, accordion, and ukulele, while also providing instruments for everyone to join in the fun. The room was filled with music, laughter, and participation from start to finish.

At Bickford, we love opportunities that encourage engagement and connection, and this performance did exactly that. When Paul asked if he'd be welcomed back, the enthusiastic response said it all!

💛 It's moments like these, where residents are actively participating, interacting, and creating memories together, that make our days so special.

From Isolation to Impact

When Gail moved into Bickford, she was living with Parkinson’s disease and struggling with deep depression. She rarely left her room and showed little interest in activities or connection. The joy and purpose that once defined her daily life felt out of reach.

Bickford’s HigherPath approach brought the team together to help Gail rediscover confidence, engagement, and meaning.
✅ HigherPath discussions and “Getting to Know You” tools helped the team identify person‑centered ways to re‑engage Gail
✅ Fox Therapy provided Parkinson’s‑focused therapy, including LSVT BIG exercises to improve balance, strength, and mobility
✅ Curana Health adjusted medications, finding the right combination to manage symptoms
✅ Gentle encouragement from the Happiness Coordinator helped Gail begin attending bingo — and even assisting with setup
✅ A Montessori‑based approach uncovered Gail’s 20‑year nursing career, leading to a meaningful new role as the community’s “Hydration Nurse”

Today, Gail has transformed from a withdrawn resident into a purposeful caregiver once again. As the Hydration Nurse, she helps others stay healthy, builds connections, and finds fulfillment in serving her community — one sip at a time.

Gail’s journey reflects the heart of the Higher Path: honoring dignity, restoring purpose, and proving that with personalized care and compassion, residents can thrive in ways that truly matter.

🧭 How do we keep our care grounded in what matters most?
We listen—to the families who trust us every day.

Instead of overwhelming surveys, we ask one intentional question each month. Just one. The reflections we receive bring clarity, inspiration, and purpose, reminding us why we do what we do.

At Bickford, care goes beyond tasks—it’s built on relationships, trust, and meaningful conversation.
