The Austin Yogurt Shop murders went unsolved from 1991 when then Detective John Jones was assigned to the case. Amidst consoling the victims families and promising to bring the perpetrator to justice, his gaudy bright green shirt was noticed the families and brought levity to an otherwise depressing situation. Detective Jones made a promise that he would wear the shirt again once the killer was found.

Finally in August of 2025, with the assistance of modern technology, the culprit of the crime was identified and closure for everyone was reached.

True to his word, now Retired Detective Jones, donned that bright green shirt one last time to contact the family and hopefully close that chapter for all of them.

This is not just about Detective Jones but about the professionalism and commitment he embodied as an Austin Police Officer, even after leaving the profession.

Let me introduce you to Sgt. Mal Wiley, the oldest surviving member of the 12 African-American police officers that served the City of Austin during 1965.

A time where the department followed suit with the nation and segregated its force.

Despite the many hardships that a black police officer would encounter during this time, Sgt. Wiley still sought justice and served the community to the best of his ability attaining the rank of Sergeant before ending his watch.

Long since retired, we would like to say thank you for paving the way for the future.
