What’s the Story With This Heatwave: How to Stay Safe.

A heat dome has settled over much of the United States, trapping hot air, making temperatures dangerously high.

Protect yourself and your family by:
• Drinking plenty of water.
• Taking breaks in the shade or spending time in air-conditioned spaces like the Austin Public Library or Mower County Senior Center.
• Watching for signs of heat illness, like dizziness, heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, or confusion.
• Checking the air quality if you have asthma or other breathing conditions: https://www.pca.state.mn.us/air-water-land-climate/current-air-quality-conditions
• Talking with your healthcare provider if you take medications that may make you more sensitive to heat.

Remember to check on older adults, young children, neighbors, and anyone without air conditioning. Make a heat plan like the one CDC suggests in the figure above.

For more information on heat safety, visit the National Weather Service Heat Risk page: https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/heatrisk/.
Or contact [email protected] at Mower County Public Health for information about heat safety or cooling centers in the area.

What’s the Story About Invisible Spread?

Did you know that you can have an infection and not know it?

Many illnesses can spread from person to person without causing obvious symptoms. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a great example. Some STIs may cause no symptoms at all, while others can remain unnoticed for months or even years and pop up later in life. During that time, a person may feel completely healthy and have no idea they are infected.

The good news is that STI screening can help identify infections early, often before symptoms develop. Early detection allows for treatment when needed, helps prevent long-term health complications, and reduces the risk of spreading infections to others.

Getting tested is a normal part of taking care of your health. There is no shame, embarrassment, or stigma in knowing your status. In fact, getting screened is a responsible step that helps protect both you and your partners.

Talk with your healthcare provider about what STI screenings may be right for you. Screening may be especially important if you have a new sexual partner, if a partner has tested positive for an STI, or if you are experiencing symptoms.

When it comes to STIs, knowledge is power—and early detection makes a difference. Need help finding a testing location near you, call our community health educator, Allison, at 507-437-9796. She would be happy to assist you!

To learn more about STI screening recommendations, visit the CDC's screening guidelines: https://www.cdc.gov/std/treatment-guidelines/screening-recommendations.htm
