On this day in 1906, a controversial incident unfolded in Brownsville, Texas, that would follow a group of Black U.S. Army soldiers for more than six decades. Members of the 25th U.S. Infantry, stationed at Fort Brown, were accused of firing into the town shortly after midnight, killing a bartender and wounding a police officer. The soldiers, many of whom had already faced racial discrimination and hostility in Brownsville, denied involvement, and investigators never identified individual gunmen. After the soldiers refused to implicate anyone, they were accused of maintaining a “conspiracy of silence.” President Theodore Roosevelt responded by ordering 167 enlisted men discharged without honor, creating one of the largest mass dismissals in U.S. Army history and sparking a national debate over race, evidence, and due process. Decades later, the case was reexamined, and in 1972 the Army changed the soldiers’ discharges to honorable. The only surviving veteran, Dorsie Willis, later received a $25,000 settlement.
