To our park visitors, this sign in the parking lot is your reminder. Unfortunately, vehicle burglaries have been reported in our lot. Thieves have targeted parked vehicles with smash-and-grab thefts while visitors are enjoying the gardens or hiking in the preserve. Taking a few simple precautions can help protect your belongings and ensure a safe and enjoyable visit:

• Remove Valuables: Take all personal items with you including bags/backpacks, electronics, charging cables, wallets/purses and loose change.

• Avoid leaving Valuables in the Trunk or Glove Box: If you must store items, put them in the trunk BEFORE arriving, as thieves often watch people from the parking lot as they hide items in their trunks.

• Lock Doors and windows even if leaving the vehicle for only a few minutes. (One of our park volunteers takes a different approach, leaving her windows rolled down when parking in the lot to discourage window-smashing.)

• Consider parking along 35th Street outside the park where increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic may reduce the likelihood of vehicle burglaries.

• Report Activity: Pay attention to individuals lingering or peering into parked cars and immediately report them to authorities.

In the event you need to report suspicious activity or a vehicle break-in with Austin Police Department (APD), you can submit it online through the iReportAustin platform OR call Austin 3-1-1.

We encourage you to take these precautions and we hope you enjoy a safe, pleasant, and memorable visit to the park. 🦚

It's that time of year when the American Beauty Berry's bright green berries will begin their color shift to striking clusters of magenta and fuchsia along the stems. There's always an impressive display of these at the park by September!

Park visitors often ask "Why didn't I see any peacocks?"

Our peafowl are free-roaming, so sightings are never guaranteed. They often wander beyond the park into the preserve, down the street to Laguna Gloria, and even into nearby neighborhoods.

If you're hoping to spot them, your best chance is to visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon and evening, when they're typically most active around the park. Every visit is a little different, so keep your eyes and ears open—you never know where they might turn up!

The gardens provide the perfect environment for pollinators, frogs, and other tiny creatures. The green froglet—the American Green Tree Frog—thrives near water sources, so the park’s ponds are perfect for them. Its color shifts to match the surrounding vegetation. The brown toadlet is a juvenile Gulf Coast Toad. They typically come out during or immediately after rain showers, especially at night. Both species natural camouflage allows them to blend into their surroundings to hide from predators. Frogs and toads benefit gardens by providing natural pest control by eating crickets, beetles, ants, spiders, mosquitoes, and other insects.

The butterfly is a Gulf Fritillary that feeds on the nectar of vibrant flowers, including lantana and zinnias.
