THE OTHER DANGER. Austin firefighters recently responded to a vehicle fire in North Austin, where crews worked quickly to extinguish the flames and keep the situation from becoming even more dangerous.
If you watch the video, you’ll notice something important: traffic on the highway continues moving right alongside the burning vehicle and the firefighters working to put it out.
Our firefighters aren’t just battling fire—they’re also working just feet away from fast-moving traffic, watching for distracted drivers and vehicles that may not slow down or move over.
⚠️ Please help us keep firefighters safe.
If you see a fire truck, ambulance, police vehicle, or other emergency responders on the roadway with their lights activated:
• Slow down.
• Move over when possible.
• Give emergency crews plenty of room to work.
• Put the phone down and stay focused on the road.
• Never drive distracted around an emergency scene.
A few extra seconds of caution can make the difference between firefighters safely going home after the call—or not.

PLUME SEEN FOR MILES. On Sunday, August 23, Austin firefighters responded to a fire at the Austin Country Flea Market at 9500 E. U.S. 290. The initial call came in around 5:22 p.m., and the incident was quickly upgraded to a second alarm as crews encountered significant fire conditions.
The fire initially involved a large structure, but wind-driven embers spread into nearby grass, creating a multi-acre brush fire. The brush fire also involved a tire pile, producing the massive column of black smoke visible for miles. AFD requested additional resources, including six brush trucks, to help contain the spreading fire.
Firefighters stopped the forward progress of the main fire and had the brush fire contained by approximately 7:47 p.m. Several structures at the flea market were damaged or collapsed as a result of the fire.
Two civilians suffered minor injuries and were evaluated by EMS; neither required transport to the hospital. No firefighters were reported injured.
The fire affected dozens of vendor stalls and left the market temporarily without electricity and phone service. The flea market, which has more than 300 vendors, was subsequently working toward reopening.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Travis County Fire Marshal’s Office.

A huge thank you to our Austin firefighters who worked tirelessly to battle this fire and protect the surrounding area. The extreme heat that day added another layer of danger and physical stress to an already challenging fireground operation.

HOT IN HERE. While most of us are trying to escape the heat, Austin firefighters are working in it—wearing heavy protective gear and breathing through an air pack while battling intense fires.
Extreme heat already puts enormous stress on the body. Add fireground temperatures, heavy gear, physical exertion, and repeated calls, and the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and other heat-related injuries increases significantly.
Our firefighters train for these conditions, but the heat doesn’t care how experienced you are. Every additional fire makes an already dangerous day even harder on the body.

Help us help you stay safe:

• Drink plenty of water before you feel thirsty
• Limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day
• Take frequent breaks in the shade or A/C
• Check on elderly neighbors, children, and those who may be vulnerable to the heat
• Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle
• Know the signs of heat illness and call 911 for a medical emergency

STILL FIGHTING. Lt Suzanne LaFollette continues to battle cancer, and while chemotherapy has brought difficult symptoms, there is some encouraging news: her medications are shrinking her tumors.
Suzanne recently shared an update after a trip with her family - a trip that came during an incredibly difficult year, but gave them an opportunity to celebrate some wins together.
They touched sea anemones, swam in the ocean, went tide pooling, and even sat in a jail cell at Alcatraz.
Suzanne got sick during the trip, but Sarah and the family pulled together, making memories and experiencing things they had never done before.
“We don’t know how long these meds will work, but we are determined to make the most of every day we can.”

Tomorrow, Suzanne will be doing exactly that - making the most of the day - alongside our firetrucks at Austin’s Pride Parade.

We’re proud to have Suzanne beside us. Her strength, resilience and determination continue to inspire all of US.

Keep fighting, Suzanne. Keep making memories. Keep celebrating the wins. We’ll be right there with you.

REPEAT OFFENDER. Recently, Austin firefighters responded to a fire at an abandoned house on W. Parmer Ln. Fire crews worked to extinguish the fire and search the structure for any possible occupants before clearing the scene and returning to service.
The structure had previously been damaged by fire. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

🚒 PUBLIC SAFETY REMINDER: If you see a fire truck or other emergency vehicle approaching from behind, slow down, move to the right, and give them room to pass. Never assume they can get around you. A few extra seconds can make a difference when crews are responding to someone’s emergency.

HAPPENING NOW. Austin firefighters are currently responding to a structure fire at an apartment complex in the 2500 block of Elmont Drive, near South Sunset Valley Road.
Please avoid the area and give firefighters room to work. Additional fire apparatus may also be responding to the scene.
If you see emergency vehicles approaching with lights and sirens, pull to the right and stop to allow them to safely pass.
We will continue to monitor the incident and provide updates from the scene as information becomes available.

Stay clear, stay alert, and help our crews get to the fire safely.

UPDATE: The fire is out, fire crews have cleaned up and cleared the scene.

NIGHT MOVES. What was dispatched as a trash fire in East Austin quickly escalated into a fully involved building fire.
Fortunately, the building was abandoned-but it was surrounded by homes and businesses. Austin firefighters arrived, went to work, and contained and extinguished the fire within minutes, preventing it from spreading to nearby properties.
No injuries were reported.
This is another reminder of how quickly a small fire can become a major threat-and why every second matters when Austin firefighters are called to the scene.

If you see a large plume of smoke or fire in your area-even if you can’t see exactly where it’s coming from call 911.
You don’t need to find the fire yourself. Give dispatchers the information you have, and firefighters will respond to investigate.
When it comes to fire, it’s always better to call than to assume someone else already has.

Austin Firefighters congratulate AFD Chief of Staff Tom Vocke on his appointment to Interim Fire Chief of the Austin Fire Department.

We thank Chief Baker for his lifetime of service and career dedicated to saving lives, protecting property, and improving the safety and working conditions for the men and women of the fire service.

With Interim Fire Chief Vocke at the helm, Austinites and Austin Firefighters may rest assured that our department will continue to fulfill the important work of protecting our city, our communities, and those who serve.

The AFA and I look forward to working with the city on a collaborative, nationwide search, for the best Chief to lead AFD into the future.
