Austin Parks and Recreation Department

Austin Parks and Recreation Department Austin Parks and Recreation oversees nearly 20,000 acres of land containing 330 parks. Governor E.M. Zilker.

The year 1875 marked the first gift of land to the City of Austin with specific direction that it be used as a park. Pease donated 23 acres of land around Shoal Creek known as Pease Park. A jewel of the park system, Barton Springs and 35 acres surrounding it was deeded to the City in 1918 by A.J. As Austin grew, so did its desire for parks and recreation facilities. In 1926, The City Council appro

priated $14,395 for a parks division. The 1927 Southwest District Conference of the National Recreation Association was sponsored by the Austin Lions Club. This initiated a recreation survey for the City of Austin which proposed the creation of a City recreation agency. The City Council passed an ordinance in May 1928 creating the Austin Recreation Division, and W.T. Caswell chaired the advisory board appointed just six days later.

Austin’s waterways are home to many different types of algae that play important roles in the natural world. However, if there’s excessive algae, it can hurt rather than help the environment.

🔍 Wildlife Watch: Rock Squirrel!

If you've noticed more squirrels in the Hartman Prehistoric Garden lately, you're not imagining it - lots of baby rock squirrels are out and about! Found throughout the Southwest and Mexico, this large species of squirrel (Otospermophilus variegatus) is a common sight in rocky habitats, where they dig deep burrows under ledges to hide out and store food in.

Next time you're in the Garden, keep an eye out for adults and youngsters scampering over the rocks, wrestling with siblings, and exploring the world beyond the burrow.

Last week, we held a ribbon-cutting for our newest city park, Ridgeline Neighborhood Park, 2701 S. Lakeline Blvd. District 6 Council member Krista Laine joined Deputy Director Adena Long, Austin Parks and Recreation staff and neighbors for the ribbon-cutting.

The new Northwest Austin green space on the border of Austin and Cedar Park features a loop trail, public sidewalks, picnic areas, bicycle racks, trash and recycling receptacles, two creeks, and Texas native and drought-resistant plantings.

In fact, if you want to see a wildflower "super bloom" in Austin, visit Ridgeline Neighborhood Park today. Walk the loop and you might experience a Texas wildflower super bloom that rivals super blooms in the Hill Country.
