For many of us with pets, we don't just consider them companions but part of the family. The same is true for our clients. We can't do it all on our own, so our partnerships with organizations like Emancipet and Austin Humane Society help us provide services and supplies to Austin's furry friends.

Emancipet comes by every month to let our clients know when they can get free or sliding scale vet services at Garrison Park, like spay/neuter, rabies vaccines, and microchip identification. Austin Humane Society provides food from their pet pantry. Having both partners in one spot at our hub makes it easier for our clients to look after animals.

Some of our favorite community partners are schools & universities and so many of them headed back to school over the last week. From schools that direct their homeless families to our Hotline to schools whose students volunteer and tour our Hub day center or build hygiene packs while learning about homelessness to universities around the country that send bachelors or masters-level students to intern on our staff, the new school year is a big time for our team and our community.

Two of our closest and most-collaborative partner schools are The Ann Richards School and Joslin Elementary. We started the year off right by bringing our team by Joslin to meet with Principal Chang and their team! If your school would like to get involved in service learning with Sunrise, we’d love to talk and have collaborations for every age group. If you know a family heading back to school with insecure housing, gently send them our way - 512-522-1097.

Housing isn't always the whole story and other pieces have to come together before it can happen. For Andre, those other pieces were health struggles that were hard to manage alone. A member of our staff provided transportation to his appointments, checked in, and made sure his needs were met. Now Andre is housed and got the support he needed to continue his journey.

Gene & Lucinda had been on the streets with their long-time dog Jackson. They were offered shelter space that couldn’t accommodate dogs so Lucinda moved off the street while Gene stayed outside to care for their pet in the brutal Texas heat.

Weeks later, when a Sunrise outreach worker heard the story, they knew that their friend Jamarian would answer the call. He did, and took their dog into his home so that Gene and Lucinda could finally be off the streets together. Sometimes it takes a community and some elbow grease to help get people - and pets - off the streets! Thanks Jamarian and congrats to Gene & Lucinda, who are on their path to a permanent place for them and their furry friend! 🐶🏠

Meet Ben, our volunteer that delivers essential food and supplies to get us through every week. Ben learned about Sunrise through his wife’s volunteer work with us and followed her example of helping our unhoused neighbors feel seen and cared for. Ben also assists with preparing and serving meals to our clients during Thanksgiving and Christmas, making them feel part of the holiday season.

His advice to fellow Austinites about the homeless community is “to regard them as fellow human beings. Do what you can, whether that’s giving them water or something for lunch. A smile and a wave means a lot to them. It’s very tragic to walk around all day and everyone looks away from you. Making a human connection makes a big difference.”

Thank you for making a difference in your community, Ben!

Three of our Ambassadors are now housed. 🎉 Big congratulations to Aaron, Kevin, and John! 💓 They lead by example everyday and consistently support their neighbors through rain and shine.

Homelessness can happen for many reasons, and every journey is unique. For Aaron, Kevin, and John, unexpected challenges including job loss, reentering the community after incarceration, and health issues led to periods of homelessness. But with determination, opportunity, and the support of our team, each found a path forward toward stability and home.

This year marks the second anniversary of our Neighbors Helping Neighbors Ambassador Program. This initiative provides paid opportunities for people experiencing homelessness to keep our local businesses, streets and parks clean, building confidence along the way.

Jacqueline and her family were going through one of the most difficult times in their lives until our Wayfinder Team responded with quick and compassionate help. Jacqueline and her kids now live together under one roof. 🏠🎉

She shares that throughout the process, Sunrise never made her feel uncomfortable, judged, or less than because she needed assistance. She says her family was treated with kindness, dignity, and respect.

"I am truly grateful for the support we received and for the positive impact they have made on our lives. The Wayfinder Program provided hope during a challenging time, and I will always be thankful for their generosity and care."

Congratulations, Jacqueline!

FORMER clients. Like teachers, while we miss seeing clients every day, running into them to the “regular world” is exactly how we know we’re doing our job. From restaurants to stores to church to PTA meetings to UT football games, when you serve 30,000 people a year, you’re bound to run into each other!

Recently our staff ran into Cory at ThunderCloud Subs and Antonio, who graduated our Ambassador program to work with our friends at Downtown Austin Alliance on their team! Here’s to more Austinites no longer needing our services!

Adrienne shares the mindset she had while experiencing homelessness and how it was hard to have hope that help was out there. She could’ve never imagined herself without a home and without her kids. At Sunrise, she was able to get support and found a clear path forward. Now she has a home with her children where she can breathe and relax. Adrienne also received a laptop after successfully completing four computer classes with us, connecting her to our digital world. We’re proud of all you’ve accomplished, Adrienne!

We LOVE it when our clients come back to update us on how far they’ve come! Xavier used to stand in line for food at our Hub day center, but is now sober, working and fully-licensed!

We get the privilege of seeing former clients working jobs in the community, coming back to introduce us to their reunited families and looking as happy and healthy as we’ve ever seen them. We love it when our former clients cheer on our current clients right alongside us! Today’s person on the street is tomorrow’s success story!
