Behind the Art | Armadillo Water Tank

Every public artwork begins with listening.

Austin Arts, Culture, Music and Entertainment and Austin Water’s latest project was shaped through artist vision, stories, ideas, and voices of the South Austin community. The Armadillo Water Tank, commissioned by the Art in Public Places program began with residents, community engagement, and time spent learning about the Armadillo Park neighborhood.

From early ideas to design inspiration to the final details, this project reflects a community’s history, character, and spirit. ❤️

Lake Austin will be drawn down beginning October 12 to allow property owners, businesses, and the City to perform routine maintenance on shoreline structures, docks, boat slips, etc. Public boat ramps along Lake Austin will be closed and swimming will be prohibited at Emma Long Metropolitan Park throughout the drawdown. The lake is expected to be back in its normal operating range by November 30.

We’re hiring an Environmental Conservation Program Manager!

This position will lead a newly formed Land Management Team responsible for planning and implementing a broad range of ecological stewardship activities across the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve and Water Quality Protection Lands. These activities include prescribed fire, wildfire fuels mitigation, habitat restoration, invasive species management, oak wilt treatment, cave and karst management, erosion control, ecological restoration, and other land management projects that promote healthy, resilient ecosystems.

This position will establish priorities, guide implementation of complex field programs, develop staff, and help build a cohesive, high-performing team within a newly organized program. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of conservation land management for one of the nation’s largest municipal conservation land portfolios, building on decades of successful stewardship while preparing these lands to meet emerging challenges such as rapid urbanization, increasing wildfire risk, invasive species, and climate change.

We're winners, baby! Six-time winners to be exact 💅 The National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) recognized our staff at the Walnut Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant for a sixth consecutive year of outstanding regulatory compliance and environmental protection with the 2026 Platinum Peak Performance Award. The award is the highest tier of recognition for compliance with Texas Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (TPDES) permits issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

Congrats to our staff for be recognized for their dedication and constant pursuit of excellence! 🎉
