The Mower County DFL delegation showed up to the 2026 State Convention with full hearts, steady purpose, and the unmistakable sense that we are witnessing history.
Organizers, neighbors, and first-time delegates stepped into the democracy business at a time when Minnesota has been shaken by profound tragedy: the killings of Mark and Melissa Hortman, the shootings of John and Yvette Hoffman, the Annunciation shooting, and the ongoing trauma of Operation Metro Surge. These moments have left communities grieving, searching, and demanding better from the systems meant to protect them.
And yet, in the middle of all that heartbreak, the delegation witnessed something powerful: people still believe in each other. People still believe in showing up. People still believe in democracy.
Paul Wellstone reminded us that “we all do better when we all do better,” and those words felt especially true as first-time convention-goers were moved to tears by the weight of this moment and the responsibility they now carry forward.
Speaker Melissa Hortman’s words echoed through the hall as well: “Do as much good for as many people as possible.” That spirit was alive in every conversation, every vote, every moment of shared resolve.
At this convention, candidates were endorsed who are ready to meet this moment. Leaders committed to safety, justice, dignity, and a Minnesota where every community can thrive. Their campaigns are not just political efforts; they are acts of hope. They are the next steps toward a future in which our children inherit a state defined not by violence but by courage and compassion.
Mower County showed up. Minnesota showed up. And together, we are choosing hope over fear, democracy over despair, and a future worthy of the people who call this state home. A future where children can inherit the courage of communities who refused to give up on each other.
