On July 20, 2026, Scott Christopher Helge, 53, of San Antonio was sentenced to 40 years in prison by Judge Bruce Boyer of the 22nd District Court. A Comal County jury previously found Helge guilty on June 3, 2026, of Driving While Intoxicated with Two or More Previous Convictions for the Same Type of Offense and he elected to have the court determine his sentence. Based on his extensive criminal history, the offense was enhanced from a Third-Degree Felony to a Habitual Offender. Helge's criminal record includes five prior DWI convictions in Williamson, Travis, Harris, and Brazos counties, three of which were felony convictions for Driving While Intoxicated with Two or More Previous Convictions for the Same Type of Offense where Helge previously served prison time.
On January 16, 2022, a New Braunfels police officer initiated a traffic stop after observing Helge speeding on a motorcycle and failing to stop at a stop sign. After pulling over, Helge denied committing the traffic violations, became increasingly argumentative with the officer, and repeatedly attempted to justify his actions. While on scene, Helge exhibited numerous signs of intoxication. His speech was slurred and difficult to understand, he swayed and staggered while walking, and the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol. Although Helge admitted to consuming alcohol, he claimed he had consumed only one alcoholic beverage. After being placed under arrest, Helge became belligerent, resisted arrest, and threatened officers, stating he would hurt them if his handcuffs were removed. At trial, video footage was played showing Helge directing repeated profanities and verbal abuse towards officers during his arrest. A blood sample later revealed Helge's blood alcohol concentration was 0.125.
On the day of sentencing, Helge also pleaded guilty to a separate pending charge of Driving While Intoxicated with Two or More Previous Convictions for the Same Type of Offense. Judge Bruce Boyer sentenced him to an additional 40 years in prison, with both sentences ordered to run concurrently.
In that case, New Braunfels police officers responded to a report of a disturbance in a business parking lot on S. Seguin Ave near Oyster Bar and Bootleggers Pizza Parlor, after witnesses reported that an intoxicated man was fighting with several women. Witnesses identified Helge as the aggressor. Officers observed multiple signs of intoxication, including bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech, a strong odor of alcohol, and difficulty maintaining his balance. Helge admitted to drinking but denied being involved in a motor vehicle crash. Witnesses, however, reported seeing Helge drive erratically, reverse the wrong way on the roadway, nearly strike another vehicle, hit a curb, and collide with a parked vehicle. A subsequent blood test revealed Helge's blood alcohol concentration was 0.137.
During closing arguments at the punishment hearing, ADA Cody Kent argued that Helge is a threat to anyone traveling on our roads and that his selfish decisions have repeatedly placed the lives of others at risk. Kent told the court that, despite years of opportunities through the criminal justice system, Helge had repeatedly demonstrated he was unwilling to change his behavior. He noted that Helge's criminal history spans six Texas counties and other states, and that previous jail sentences, probation, rehabilitation programs, classes, and counseling had failed to stop him from drinking and driving.
Both cases were investigated by the New Braunfels Police Department and prosecuted on behalf of the State of Texas by Assistant District Attorneys Cody Kent and Jennifer Feldman, with assistance from DA Investigators Ashley Eicher and Jacob Starr.
