On This Day: Fifty-nine years ago today, on June 13, 1967, President Johnson nominated Solicitor General Thurgood Marshall to the Supreme Court of the United States. Following his confirmation, Marshall became the nation’s 96th and first African American SCOTUS Justice.

In announcing Marshall’s nomination, Johnson did not mention his race, saying simply, “I believe he earned the appointment. He deserves the appointment. He's best qualified by training and by very valuable service to the country. I believe it's the right thing to do, the right time to do it, the right man and the right place.”

On This Day: On June 12, 1924, former President George H.W. Bush was born in Milton, MA.

On President Johnson’s last day in office, then-Congressman Bush went to Andrews Air Force Base to bid farewell to LBJ before his return to Texas. When President Bush passed away in 2018, we shared a tribute honoring his remarkable legacy: www.lbjlibrary.org/news-and-press/press-releases/tribute-to-george-h-w-bush

On This Day: Fifty-nine years ago, on the morning of June 10, 1967, Israel agreed to a ceasefire ending the Six Day War.

Meanwhile, in the Situation Room, President Johnson received a hotline message from Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin stating that unless Israel halted its operations within hours, the USSR would take military action. In his response, President Johnson assured Kosygin that the United States had received assurances from Israel.

“I have your message. You should know that late last night our Secretary of State sent a most urgent message to Israel to say that we considered it very important that Israel demonstrate by actions on the ground that its orders for a cease-fire are effective. We received assurance at 3 A.M. Washington time that Israel fully intended to achieve actual cease-fire on its side.”

On This Day: In 1967, during the ongoing Six Day War, the American ship USS Liberty was attacked by Israeli forces in international waters off the Sinai coast.

In President Johnson’s memoir, “The Vantage Point,” he remarked: “For seventy tense minutes we had no idea who was responsible, but at eleven o’clock we learned that the ship had been attacked in error by Israeli gunboats and planes. Ten men of the Liberty crew were killed and a hundred were wounded.* This heartbreaking episode grieved the Israelis deeply, as it did us.”

*President Johnson was referring to the initial reports. The attack ultimately killed 34 crew members and wounded 171.

It’s Higher Education Day!

When President Johnson signed the Higher Education Act in 1965 at his alma mater, Southwest Texas State College (now Texas State University), he knew it would create opportunities for young Americans. He stated, “…it is the most important door that will ever open—the door to education.” 📚
