State Representative Penny Morales Shaw is an attorney in Houston, Texas, where she represents the 148th District in the Texas House of Representatives, which includes parts of Spring Branch, Garden Oaks / Oak Forest, Carverdale, and Cypress-Fairbanks. During the 87th Legislative Session, Penny served

on the House Committee on Environmental Regulation and the House Committee on Urban Affairs. For her accomplishments as a legislator, she was awarded "Freshman of the Year" by the Mexican American Legislative Caucus. She is a member of the House Innovation & Technology Caucus, the House LGBTQ Caucus, the Legislative Study Group, the Mexican-American Legislative Caucus (MALC), the Texas Legislative Ports Caucus, the Texas Women’s Health Caucus, and a founding member of both the Democratic Progressive Caucus and the House Caucus on Climate, Environment, and the Energy Industry. Penny is a native Houstonian, attended Houston public schools, and has lived in northwest Houston for the past ten years, where she raised four successful children as a single mother while managing her multi-state law practice. Penny understands the challenges that face working families and this shapes the passion and pragmatism that drive her advocacy: from serving as an attorney at NAACP legal clinics early in her career, to fighting for passage of the International Violence Against Women Act, to her role as Deputy Chief for Harris County Commissioner, Precinct 2, where she oversaw policy and legislative affairs. Penny is honored to bring this breadth of experience as the State Representative for District 148 in the Texas House of Representatives.

Thank you, Gloria.

For decades, Gloria Steinem’s relentless advocacy for equality and freedom paved the road for generations of women to lead and have their voices heard. May she rest in peace.

Dolly Parton’s legacy and impact transcend generations of music, education, and culture. A young girl from the mountains of Tennessee shattered glass ceilings across the country music industry, and she wielded her relentless advocacy for childhood education, leading to the creation of her Imagination Library to help young children read.

We will always love you, Dolly. May she rest in peace and may we continue her legacy.

Bishop James Dixon II is a community champion and stalwart pillar to many, many people around the world. Through his ministry here in Houston at Community of Faith, his faith work and civic leadership are unparalleled. We are so very honored to have celebrated him last week for making this city proud to call him our own.

For every 100 Houstonians who need workforce, veteran, or senior housing at an affordable price, we currently have about 30 units or houses available- a tremendous shortfall.

I attended the Affordable Housing conference in Austin to learn about the barriers that developers and banks face to build more units.

One key statistic that is predicted to hurt future homeownership and rentals is the declining job market. Last year, 180k jobs were created- that’s usually the number of jobs created in 1 month!

Daunting insurance rates are another impediment, as well as the rising cost of building materials and labor shortages.

I want Texas to do so much better for everyone that calls Texas home, and that’s what I will continue to champion at the State Capitol.

This week we were honored to be a part of the Cy-Fair Helping Hands’ Back to School Bash.

This year marks our 4th year partnering to serve Cy-Fair ISD kids and families. The joy of seeing kids smile after picking their books at our table never gets old. The auditorium was full of community partners who are dedicated to seeing our kids succeed.

Every child should have the resources to start a new school year strong, and I am proud to be part of the community supporting this mission.

Air Alliance Houston is looking for volunteers to host air quality monitors outside of their homes, community centers, businesses or schools in the LaPorte, Conroe, Meadowbrook (Greater East End) & Texas City area.

By hosting a monitor, you'll help support a network that tracks local air quality and provides real-time information to the community. This data helps neighbors recognize when air pollution reaches unhealthy levels so they can make informed decisions and take steps to reduce their exposure.

Want to host an air monitor or have questions?

We're just a few weeks away from the first day of class across - including Ermel Elementary. Thank you to our incredible community partners for helping empower our youngest minds with new backpacks for the year.

When times get tough, I think about days like today and the joy these children have. May we continue to advocate for all of our kids in schools, and continue the good work to bring them and their teachers the resources they need.
