Col. Arthur Levesque, Commander, 2nd Brigade, Texas State Guard, awards the Texas State Guard Good Conduct Medal and the Texas State Guard Service Medal to Chaplain Maj. John Mathews and Maj. Mathew Bramanti and the Texas State Guard Achievement Medal to Sgt. 1st Class Dennis McLane and Maj. Bramanti for their assistance in the 2025 Young Heroes of the Guard Toy Drive benefiting the 501(c)(3) Texas Toy Drive, during a ceremony at the Texas National guard Armory, Houston, Texas, May 17, 2026. Both McLane and Bramanti worked tirelessly to support the toy drive at the 2nd Brigade headquarters level. More than 4,000 toys were collected and distributed to children in pediatric hospitals and shelters. Also, just over 400 toys were distributed at the first home game for Kerrville ISD in the wake of the devastating flooding in their area last July. Thanks to all who volunteered their time in selfless service, one of the 7 core values of the U.S. Army, shared by the Texas Military Department. Well done all. Duty First, Texas Always! Texas State Guard,

As we approach Memorial Day, we pause as a nation and as a military force to remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to the United States. Memorial Day is more than a holiday or the beginning of summer; it is a solemn reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by generations of Americans who answered the call to serve something greater than themselves.

Every member of the military understands that service carries sacrifice. Families endure separation, service members place duty before comfort, and many willingly stand in harm’s way to defend their fellow citizens, their communities, and the ideals of this nation. Memorial Day honors those who gave everything in that service. Their courage, devotion, and selflessness form the foundation of the freedoms we enjoy today.

For the Texas State Guard, Memorial Day also serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of service. While our missions focus on supporting the people of Texas during disasters, emergencies, and times of need, we remain part of a proud military tradition rooted in duty, sacrifice, and service to others. We stand alongside those who have worn the uniform before us and carry forward the values they defended.

As Texas Guard Service Members, we honor the fallen not only through remembrance but through how we serve today with professionalism, compassion, readiness, and commitment to our fellow Texans and our nation.

This Memorial Day, I ask each of you to take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by our fallen heroes and the families they have left behind. Their legacy lives on in our continued service and in our commitment to uphold the ideals they fought to protect.

I appreciate your dedication to the Texas State Guard, the Texas Military Department, the State of Texas, and our nation.

May we never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Texas State Guard Commanding General, Maj. Gen. Roger Sheridan and Command Sgt. Major, Sgt. Maj. Jerry Kovar, out doing what they do best — leading from the front. Not only do they serve together, they train together.

Proud to see our top leaders hitting the field with our Soldiers during Annual Training. This is the Texas State Guard spirit: leadership by example, always mission-ready.

Col. Arthur Levesque, Commander, 2nd Brigade, Texas State Guard, promotes Kristine Ferrer-Russ, Encarnason Ozuna and Angafor Silas to Sergeant, Qaiser Mohiuddin to Staff Sergeant, Michael Faber to Chief Warrant Officer 2 and awards the Texas Medal of Merit to Sgt. Laura Carrell during a ceremony at the conclusion of Annual Training, Texas A&M University, RELLIS Campus, Bryan, Texas, April 26, 2026. Sergeant and Staff Sergeant are Non-Commisioned Officer (NCO) ranks that are part of the backbone of the Texas State Guard and any military, responsible for prompt and efficient ex*****on of orders to complete the mission. Warrant Officers are highly skilled experts in their fields, relied upon by commissioned officers and NCOs alike for their expertise. The Texas Medal of Merit is awarded to a member of the military forces of this state, another state, or the United States who performs outstanding service or attains extraordinary achievement in behalf of the state or United States. From the citation for Sgt. Carrell:
"Her efforts resulted in soldiers' near-perfect mission readiness and deployability over multiple venues and operations and her work contributed to mission accomplishment and the assurance of mission success."
