🚨 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘄𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝘅𝗮𝘀: Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins confirmed the detection of New World screwworm in a three-week-old calf in Zavala County, marking the first confirmed U.S. detection. There are 5 animal cases in Texas as of 6/11, according to the USDA.

NWS is a parasitic fly that primarily affects livestock, pets and wildlife by laying eggs in wounds, where larvae can cause severe tissue damage.

State and federal animal health officials have launched a coordinated response to contain and eradicate the pest. Monitoring and control efforts are underway in the affected area. According to Gov. Greg Abbott, there is currently “no food safety issue.”

The Texas Department of State Health Services is hosting a webinar on Ebola Disease Outbreak for providers on June 11 from 12 - 1:30 p.m. CT.

The webinar will cover situational background, clinical overview, including symptoms, treatment, testing/specimen collection and shipping. The webinar will also cover key information on viral hemorrhagic fever.

Healthcare facilities should maintain a standard level of care for suspected cases and coordinate with local health departments to develop facility-specific response plans.
