The township took down the raised beds and posts for the raspberries and blackberries without warning 😞…we have new interest in the neighborhood to start fixing some things up out there and are hoping for some Community help ☺️. There is a sign at the northwest corner of the property where if you have any donations you can drop it there. There is a list of things needed. We are looking for anyone who has full sized whole cinderblocks, or left over bricks or pavers to work on a pathway and new raised beds. There are a few other things as well. Please see pictures below. If you would like to help out with the garden, please comment on here with what you are able to do or would like to be able to do out there and someone will contact you. Thanks! 😊

Sunflower field planted today!

We have 8 raised beds that need adopted. First come first served. All of you who committed last winter or any newcomers all you need to do is go to the Garden and "stake your claim". with some sort of home made marker with your name on it in one of the beds. Let us know when you have claimed your spot. If they are not all taken by planting time and you would like a second one that can be arranged.

When Rick Stauffer and I proposed this idea for a community garden 3 years ago, Rick said it would take an army of volunteers to make this work and he was right. Initially we had about 86 people sign up as volunteers. Other than the board of directors of those 86 "volunteers" we might have seen 12 show up to actually do something and not that often. People are often "gung ho" about the idea until it comes time to actually show up and work. Last spring we had a new volunteer who offered to plow the fields for free. Although his intentions were good the weather did not cooperate and the field was not properly plowed and our sunflower field did very poorly. This spring we will spend some money and get the fields plowed and seeded properly. Who wants to commit right now to planting sunflower seeds on a Saturday in late May? With enough people this will take an hour to accomplish. The raised beds will be offered to any organization or individual who would like to "adopt" a bed or beds to maintain and grow whatever they want Who wants to commit to adopting a bed right now? The well idea was not practical because without volunteers to plant and tend to crops there was no reason to have an expensive water supply. Woodside Garden will thrive and survive only if the community, meaning you reading this, step up and commit to making it work. This is YOUR land so if you want to see this project succeed don't leave it up to somebody else to make it happen. "Likes" on facebook don't get things done. Commit to showing up and hold yourself to it.

Who wants to see the garden stay a part of the community? Who wants to see something actually happen there this year? Who is concerned the property will be sold to the highest bidder? Well... it’s time to go to the Austintown trustee meeting because almost all the people who started and volunteered their time to work and fundraise for the garden have been transferred away by General Motors. We don’t want to see this place and all our work go to waste. Someone please step up, go make sure the trustees haven’t decided something else for the property and start a new volunteer group. Make the times and work around your schedules. It can be a lot of work but not with a good group of people and a love of gardening. Message here on the garden if you follow through with this and need the names of who had control of the money that was raised, we can add you on here as well. It’s still there so you are not starting from scratch like we did....

Would you like to participate in the garden this year? Have you been wondering how this works or what you can do to help out? Well great news! There are many ways to help and be a part of your local community garden! You can come out on a weekly garden night, stop by for a bit of time when you are free and pull a few weeds, walk the grounds and if you see some trash pick it up, help out at a fundraiser, tell your friends and family about the garden work and fundraisers, donate to the garden with time, money, and objects for the garden, come out to a planting event, and many more ways!!! All volunteers have free reign to pick all the produce you need, it’s a win win situation! Hope to see you all out there!
