Summer officially begins tomorrow, June 21st, and there is nothing like an Alabama summer!

Our state is filled with beautiful landscapes, fascinating wildlife, and the nicest people anywhere. Whatever your plans may be for the summer, there are so many things you can do right in your own backyard. From visiting a local farmers market and starting a container garden to spotting pollinators and attending an Extension event, there are plenty of ways to learn, explore, and enjoy everything that Alabama has to offer.

In this episode of the Alabama Crops Report, hosts Simer Virk and Scott Graham talk with Kris Balkcom, Aaron Wells, and Sedrick Mack for an update on planting in the Wiregrass region.

After a dry start to spring, ample rainfall has improved soil moisture conditions. However, that rainfall has also slowed planting progress. Along with planting delays, swapping dry conditions for wet fields has led to crop management issues.

Pollinators, such as insects, birds and bats, play a big role in our food system. Through pollinating plants and crops, they are responsible for one out of every three bites of food people eat. National Pollinator Week, which runs June 22 to 28, aims to highlight these important creatures while encouraging people to learn how to help and protect their populations.

Autauga County Extension Hosts
“Cultivate Learning” Summer Enrichment Event

Autauga County Extension recently hosted its “Cultivate Learning with Autauga County Schools” program, engaging more than 360 students and 135 adults in a day of hands-on agricultural education and enrichment. The event was held in partnership with the Autauga County Board of Education as part of a summer program designed to introduce students in grades K–5 to the importance of agriculture.
Students participated in a variety of interactive learning stations that highlighted key agricultural concepts. Activities included making real butter by shaking heavy cream, creating living seed necklaces, and learning about the vital role of bees in food production. A petting zoo provided the opportunity for students to interact with a variety of livestock, offering a closer look at animals commonly found on farms.
A special highlight of the day was a visit from Autaugaville native and nationally recognized rodeo entertainer Trent McFarland, who captivated participants with an engaging presentation.
The event provided a fun, educational environment where students could connect with agriculture through experiential learning. “Cultivate Learning” exemplifies the ongoing partnership between Autauga County Extension and the Autauga County School System to promote agricultural literacy and inspire the next generation.

Alabama is home to a variety of snakes, including six venomous species. The copperhead and cottonmouth are the most encountered of the venomous snake species throughout the state. Understanding their differences, similarities and behaviors can help residents appreciate the vital roles these snakes play in the ecosystem.
