APRIL 19TH BEACH FILL UPDATE: 55,000 CUBIC YARDS OF SAND PLACED ON AVALON'S BEACHES

A progress meeting was held in Avalon April 19th, 2023 for the Avalon beach fill project. To date, approximately 55,000 cubic yards of sand have been placed on the beach. The initial sand volume is to create a "pad" on the beach for safe and efficient operations. The project continues 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will only stop for mechanical failure or unsafe weather conditions. Currently, the 9th-12th street beaches are a construction zone and off limits to the public; a few more deliveries of equipment are necessary at the 20th Street beach crossover. If there were no interruptions in the project, the anticipation completion date in Avalon is May 9th, 2023; however, it is very unlikely the project will be uninterrupted as spring brings rough seas, at times. We will continue to provide updates as necessary. Please understand the north end beaches are a construction zone. When the beach fill moves south, newly replenished beaches will be opened when new beach paths are constructed.

The Avalon municipal election is scheduled for Tuesday, May 9, and Mayor Martin Pagliughi recently announced Team Avalon 2023. It includes councilman John McCorristin running for mayor, and incumbent councilmembers Barbara Juzaitis and Sam Wierman seeking re-election.

The ticket signals the end of a legendary run of public service for Pagliughi, who is ending a 32-year run as mayor and served in city council before that.

“It has been a blessing to serve our community for over three decades, and it’s time for new leadership who shares with me a high standard of public policy principles,” says Pagliughi, who was first elected mayor in 1991.

“This ticket includes three highly skilled, dedicated public servants who are directly involved with and responsible for much of the progress in our community. John and this ticket have my full endorsement and support.”
