Independence Township is nestled in the hills of Southwestern PA, Washington County, in the town of Avella. A beautiful rural place to live, work and play, we have beautiful scenery, farmland, forests, friendly residents and close-knit communities. There is a lot to do here, such as hiking, relaxing or playing at the park, golfing, dining and much more. Cross Creek Lake and Meadowcroft Rockshelter & Historic Village are popular tourist destinations in neighboring townships.

📚✨ STORYTIME IS TOMORROW — SPECIAL SATURDAY EDITION! ✨📚

The Avella Public Library’s Storytime is back tomorrow, Saturday, August 29! 🧸📖

After the wonderful response to this year’s Summer Reading Program, the library is continuing its new Monthly Storytime for children and families! ❤️

🧸 Saturday, August 29
🕚 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM

🌟 A SPECIAL SATURDAY NOTE: The library is not normally open on Saturdays, but the librarians are opening especially for Storytime tomorrow!

📚 Want to stop in, browse the shelves or check out some books? The library will be open to everyone from 11:00 AM–12:00 PM, even if you aren't attending Storytime!

🧸 Storytime includes:
📖 A fun story
🎨 A simple craft
🍎 A snack
😊 Time to make new friends
📚 Books to check out and take home

This program is geared toward younger children, but all ages are welcome!

🇺🇸 WE NEED YOUR HELP, INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP! 🇺🇸

Independence Township is planning a FREE, family-friendly Celebration Day & Community Picnic on Saturday, September 26th at Independence Township Community Park - and we want to make it a day everyone in our community can enjoy together! 🎉

But there’s one BIG thing we need before we can make it happen…

👉 VOLUNTEERS!

With less than a month to go, we need community members willing to help plan, organize and run the event. This can be as much or as little as you’re able to give, and you can lend a hand in the area that interests you.

We need help with things like:

🍔 Food & drinks
🎯 Yard games
🎈 Kids’ activities
🚗 Parking & traffic
🪑 Event setup
🧹 Cleanup
📋 Planning & organizing
…and more!

You don’t have to commit to doing everything. If you can take ownership of one small part of the day—or simply lend a hand wherever needed—we would LOVE to have you involved!

❤️ The township is providing the food, free admission and activities, but we need volunteers to help make it all happen.

⚠️ If we don’t have enough volunteers, we may not be able to hold the event.

*We know this is scheduled on the same day as Extreme Bull Riding, an evening event scheduled for Sept 26th at Little A Town Arena, but our picnic will be very early in the day, so members of our community will be able to enjoy both of these events!

Your local volunteer fire department may need you — even if you have absolutely no desire to run into a burning building.

When people hear that their local fire company needs volunteers, they often assume that means becoming a firefighter.

It doesn't.

Volunteer fire companies need all kinds of people, with all kinds of skills.

You may be able to help with fundraising, community events, administrative work, social media, photography, grant writing, maintenance, traffic control/fire police, auxiliary activities, bookkeeping, recruitment, or simply lending an extra set of hands when there's work to be done.

Maybe you have a professional skill that could benefit your department. Maybe you're great at organizing events. Maybe you can cook. Maybe you have a few hours a month and just want to do something meaningful in your community.

There may be a place for you.

Our volunteer fire departments aren't just emergency services. They're community organizations made up of neighbors who choose to give their time to help other neighbors.

And keeping them strong takes more than firefighters.

If you've ever thought, “I'd like to help, but I don't know what I could do,” stop by your local fire company and ask.

You might be surprised how much you have to offer. ❤️🚒

🚌💛 SCHOOL BUS SAFETY: LET’S PROTECT OUR KIDS! 💛🚌

Avella School District is back to school today! And what could be more important than keeping our kids safe?

As our students head to and from school each day, we’re sharing these important school bus safety reminders for drivers, parents and students.

🚨 FOR ALL MOTORISTS: When you see a school bus slowing down or stopping, don’t just watch the bus — pay attention to the surrounding area, too. Children may be nearby, crossing the road or getting on and off the bus.

🛑 WHEN THE RED LIGHTS ARE FLASHING AND THE STOP ARM IS EXTENDED, YOU MUST STOP. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PASS THE BUS.

Illegal school bus passing puts children and everyone else on the road at risk. All 50 states have laws requiring motorists to stop for a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm deployed.

A few important reminders:
• 🟡 Yellow flashing lights: Slow down and prepare to stop.
• 🔴 Red flashing lights + extended stop arm: Come to a complete stop and remain stopped until the lights stop flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn and the bus begins moving.
• 👀 Watch for children: Be especially alert around bus stops, neighborhoods and school arrival and dismissal times.

According to NHTSA, school buses are among the safest ways for children to travel to school — but children are particularly vulnerable when waiting at bus stops and getting on or off the bus.

Please slow down, pay attention and STOP FOR THE BUS. A few extra seconds could protect a child’s life. 💛
