💧 We’ve seen the concerns being shared on Facebook about water and sewer rates, and we understand. The July 2026 increase is the final year of the five-year rate schedule approved in 2022 following the Prop. 218 public hearing, where no majority protest was received.

Councilmember Gravelle motioned first with YES, along with Hernandez, Ramirez and Preciado; Verdugo was absent. The increases were planned through 2026.

We know the economy is tough. These rates help cover the real cost of providing safe, reliable water—including the electricity and infrastructure needed to move water from the canal to Avenal. We hope projects such as a new storage tank and future water plant improvements can help reduce costs in the future.

The rate schedule has also been included with utility billing information before each annual increase. Full documents and rates are available at: cityofavenal.gov/227/Utility-Billing

💧 Hemos visto las preocupaciones compartidas en Facebook sobre las tarifas de agua y alcantarillado, y las entendemos. El aumento de julio de 2026 es el último año del plan de tarifas de cinco años aprobado en 2022, después de la audiencia pública de la Prop. 218, donde no se recibió una protesta mayoritaria.

Sabemos que la economía está difícil. Estas tarifas ayudan a cubrir el costo real de brindar agua segura y confiable, incluyendo la electricidad e infraestructura necesarias para traer el agua del canal hasta Avenal.

🔥💦 From fighting fire to fighting water balloons!

After quickly extinguishing a vegetation fire near residential homes, Avenal Fire teamed up with PARCS for our first End of Summer Soak Day!

🏠 18 homes and families | 🎈 Too many water balloons to count | 🔫 Plenty of water-gun battles | 😂 And a whole lot of laughs

This is what serving our community looks like — showing up when there’s an emergency, and showing up for the good times too. ❤️

Thank you to every family who came outside, got soaked, and had some fun with us. Avenal, we’re here to serve you — however that looks. 🚒💦

And judging by these smiles… I think we’re gonna need a 2nd Annual Soak Day. 😎

Después de apagar rápidamente un incendio de vegetación cerca de varias viviendas, Avenal Fire se unió con PARCS para celebrar nuestro primer End of Summer Soak Day.

Así se ve servir a nuestra comunidad: estar presentes durante una emergencia y también estar presentes para los buenos momentos. ❤️

Gracias a cada familia que salió, se empapó y se divirtió con nosotros. Avenal, estamos aquí para servirles — de cualquier manera que eso se vea. 🚒💦

🔥 VEGETATION FIRE | UNION & SHASTA

At approximately 4:26 PM, Avenal Fire crews responded to a vegetation fire in the area of Union Avenue and Shasta Street.

Chief 32, Engine 33, and Water Tender 37 arrived to find a palm tree and nearby vegetation burning near several homes. Crews quickly contained the fire before it could spread to adjacent properties.

This incident is also a good example of why w**d abatement and defensible space matter. The lot had already been mowed, and both neighboring properties had good vegetation clearance. Less fuel helped limit the fire’s spread and gave crews a better opportunity to contain it quickly.

Please continue keeping w**ds, dry grass, and dead vegetation cleared from around your property.

INCENDIO DE VEGETACIÓN | UNION Y SHASTA

Aproximadamente a las 4:26 PM, bomberos de Avenal respondieron a un incendio de vegetación por el área de Union Avenue y Shasta Street.

Chief 32, Engine 33 y Water Tender 37 llegaron y encontraron una palmera y vegetación cercana en llamas, cerca de varias casas. Los bomberos pudieron controlar el incendio rápidamente antes de que se extendiera a las propiedades de al lado.

Este incidente es un buen ejemplo de por qué es importante mantener los lotes limpios y tener buen espacio alrededor de las casas. El lote ya había sido cortado y las dos propiedades vecinas tenían la vegetación bien limpia. Al haber menos maleza y pasto seco, había menos material para que el fuego siguiera avanzando.

Les pedimos que sigan limpiando la maleza, el pasto seco y la vegetación mu**ta alrededor de sus propiedades.

Avenal is proud of our very own Shavana Trejo and Avenal Underdogs Boxing! 🥊🏆

Shavana brought home a National Championship at the International PAL Boxing Championships in Oxnard and was also recognized as Best Overall Female Boxer — an incredible accomplishment! Our community could not be prouder. Her hard work, discipline, and heart are paying off in a big way.

🚒 Not every day is ladders, community events, or life around the station. Sometimes the job throws something a little different at us. Today, that was chlorine gas.

Today, Avenal Fire personnel participated in a Chlorine Gas Class hosted by the California Rural Water Association here in Avenal.

Crews learned about chlorine gas hazards, utility operations, and received hands-on training with a Chlorine Gas Cylinder Type A Repair Kit.

It’s not something we deal with every day, and that’s exactly why we train on it.

Serving our community also means understanding the systems, infrastructure, and hazards that are already here. Because the middle of an emergency is a pretty lousy time to start figuring all of that out.

Thank you to the California Rural Water Association for the training and opportunity.

 No todos los días son escaleras, eventos comunitarios o la vida en la estación. A veces este trabajo nos pone algo diferente enfrente. Hoy nos tocó entrenar con gas cloro.

Hoy, personal de Avenal Fire participó en una clase sobre gas cloro impartida por la California Rural Water Association aquí en Avenal.

Nuestros bomberos aprendieron sobre los riesgos del cloro, cómo funcionan estos sistemas y tuvieron práctica con un kit de reparación Tipo A para cilindros de cloro.

No es algo que enfrentamos todos los días, y precisamente por eso lo entrenamos.

Servir a nuestra comunidad también significa conocer los sistemas, la infraestructura y los riesgos que existen aquí. Porque en medio de una emergencia no es momento de empezar a descubrir cómo funciona todo.

Gracias a la California Rural Water Association por el entrenamiento y la oportunidad.
