Throwback Thursday: School Houses Then and Now.
This week let’s look back on the West Sand Lake District 4 school house. This building still stands next to the old Salem Evangelical Church, both on the left just north of the village of W. Sand Lake on Rte 150. The class photos unfortunately are not labeled, but look like they were taken on the church steps next door. The short article from New York State Education 1962 about W. Sand Lake teacher Mrs. Charles Miller who started teaching in 1882 is interesting. Could that be her in the third photo?

Throwback Thursday: A question on the locations of the old original school houses and what they look like today came up last week. For the next few weeks we’ll do a “Then and Now” on all 11 Sand Lake Schools. Let’s start with District School 7 next to the Averill Park Post Office. This was a two room schoolhouse. Today it’s the home of the Sand Lake Veterans. Plans are in the works to share the space with the Sand Lake Historical Society and create a museum space down stairs.

Thanks, as always, to our illustrious Town Historian Bob Moore. Congratulations, Bob, on 50 Years of teaching and sharing your passion for American History! Huzza!

Throwback Thursday: While we’re in the back-to-school mode, let’s check out the early school houses in Sand Lake. This "First Fifty Years" book, 1929-1979, includes photos of the first 11 school houses. I’ve included six of the eleven, all still standing except the Holcomb School District 2. I’ve also included Dr. Thero, principal of Algonquin Middle School. Dr. Thero later became our Superintendent of Schools.
In the early 1970s he was my professor of education at Siena College and became my mentor.

Hey, everyone...why don't you join us for the Town of Sand Lake Climate Committee's fall clean-up day. Meet at Butler Park 8am on Saturday, September 26 and help us clean up the dog walk, town beach and other areas of town.
