It’s going to be a HOT one, folks! Reliable sources are predicting sunny skies and temps in the triple digits with even 90s even here in Avila Beach! That means crowds. People will be coming in from all over to enjoy our beautiful shores. But that heat also means that the insides of our parked cars will average upwards of 120 to even 140 degrees! This is not a sustainable living environment for our furry friends. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS IN THE CAR. LEAVE THEM AT HOME INSTEAD.
Please keep in mind that:
• Dogs ARE allowed off-leash and under voice-command control on Olde Port Beach.
• Dogs ARE allowed off-leash and under voice-command control on Avila Beach but only before 10:00 a.m. and after 5:00 p.m. daily.
• NO dogs are allowed on Fisherman’s Beach.
Summer Heat Safety Tips for our 4-Legged Friends:
• CARS ARE NOT PET-FRIENDLY – The inside of a car, especially on a hot day is typically 20 to 30 degrees hotter than the temperature outside. That number goes up if you park in direct sunlight and/or leave the windows rolled up.
• SUN BURNS – Yes, even dogs can get sun burns. Their noses, bellies, and areas with particularly thinner fur are susceptible to the sun’s hot rays so it’s important to protect your pooch.
• SALT WATER – Your pup may be inclined to lap up the salty ocean water if he’s thirsty, but the salt, bacteria and parasites in the water can make them sick. Prevent your dog from drinking salt water by providing plenty of fresh water.
• HOT SAND/ASPHALT – If the sand or paved walkway is too hot for you to walk barefoot, then it’s too hot for your dog’s paw pads.
• HEATSTROKE SYMPTOMS – Heavy panting and bright red tongue, weakness, fatigue, rapid heart rate, vomiting. The saliva will be thick and sticky due to dehydration. When shock sets in, the pet may experience seizures and collapse which can be *fatal*. Seek veterinary care immediately.
PLEASE TAKE CARE OF YOUR PETS!!
