Aktion Club of Highlands County is a civic group consisting of adults with disabilities. It is sponsored by Kiwanis Club of Sebring. The club meets every third Thursday of the month at 2:30 p.m. at the Heartland Horses Equine Activities & Learning, 4305 Independence St., off College Drive near Ridge Area Arc. Aktion Club of Highlands County had 62 members enjoy a day of bowling at Bowl Of Fun Lanes in Wauchula last Saturday afternoon. They celebrated afterwards by having pizza and wings for dinner and medals were presented to everyone along with special bowling pins they could wear. Glad to see all the happy smiles.

Rachel Sasser, of Sebring, incorporated a bit of humor in her speech Thursday night to win the Aktion Club of Highlands County Speech Contest at the Avon Park Rotary Club building.
This year, there were eight contestants participating in the annual countywide speech contest.
David Bruns with the Hotel Jacaranda in Avon Park, Shirley Johnson with the Highlands County Sheriff's Office and Vernetta Bolton with FLASH STARS Achievement Center and Kiwanis Club of Sebring were the returning judges for the event. Ora Brownell, of Sebring, who is the newly crowned 2026 National American Miss Pre-Teen, was a special guest judge for this year's event.
In addition to Sasser taking first place, other winners were Brianna Davis took home second place; Stephanie Travi, third; Dustin Cole, fourth; Ralph Meyers, fifth; Jack Garnett, sixth; Angie Luft, seventh; and Samara Chandler, eighth. They were each presented certificates.
The top four winners in the county will have their recorded speeches advance to the state level for competition in September. Four club members also completed posters for the state competition.
CONGRATULATIONS to all the participants. You did an excellent job.

Speech Contest topic is: What have you have learned about your community through Aktion Club.
Poster Contest topic is: A service project your club completed this year that addresses a community need or promotes a cause and explains how people can help.

The Aktion Club turned a stormy day into a social fun time with friends last Saturday. With swimsuits on and beach towels in hand, the Aktion Club had high hopes of dipping into a cool pool of water at Sebring High School. A few were able to spend about 10 minutes in the pool. But, lightning kept striking in the area and causing the event to be canceled. Club members enjoyed a picnic lunch and socializing with their peers. Nice to see smiles even on a day that was a wash for the activity.

After taking a couple months off for the summer for vacations, the Aktion Club received a red carpet treatment with celebrities greeting them into their meeting. They also enjoyed a birthday celebration for everyone who had a birthday in May, June and July. Cupcakes and drinks were served. Prizes were handed out. Zane Day was presented his certificate, pin and badge for being a new member. Welcome back Aktion Club! See you all at the swimming pool on Saturday at 4 p.m. for a splashing great time.

Aktion Club members Ralph Meyers, Eva Monk and James Beavers manned a water station for the Firecracker 5K on July 4 at Highlands Hammock State Park in Sebring. They passed out water to approximately 400 runners and walkers in the event. Volunteer Patty Dalton also helped. Great job team!
